Game Night: CIF Playoffs-Semi Finals

Madden Iamaleava and Warren face Chaminade at home in a Division 3 matchup. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Friday November 17

DIV 3

Chaminade (7-5) at Warren (10-2)

A battle of two powerful teams. Chaminade coming out of the always tough Mission League while Warren hails from the Gateway where it seems like every week is another big test. The Bears lost only two games all year and had several big victories including a huge win over Downey at SoFi Stadium. It will be close with lead changes throughout the contest. Warren prevails in the end.

Warren 34 Chaminade 31

DIV 4

La Serna (9-3) at Culver City (9-3)

La Serna has played a tough schedule all year so this will be nothing new. The Lancers may be playing their best football of the season. Last week they dropped 50 on Trabuco Hills in the second round. Culver City has traditionally had an explosive offense. Last week the Centaurs overwhelmed Capistrano Valley 44-16. Could turn into a shootout but La Serna makes more stops. Lancers advance to the Finals.

La Serna 38 Culver City 31

DIV 7

Mayfair (9-3) at Muir (9-3)

Muir has always had a good offense but now the Mustangs defense is also playing well. They have only allowed 27 points in their last five games including three shutouts. Last week the Stangs shutdown Agoura 14-7. Mayfair also plays in the Gateway and has wins over La Mirada and Village Christian on its resume and last week beat a solid Chino team 45-21. Both teams evenly matched. Could come down to a kick in the end. The Monsoons emerge with the win.

Mayfair 30 Muir 27

DIV 8

Highland (8-4) at Charter Oak (4-8)

Charter Oak’s “second season” continues after last week’s 23-7 win over Covina. The Chargers, after a 2-8 regular season are now in the Semi-Finals. Highland, out of the Golden League, lost its first three games of the season but has won 8 of 9 since. Highland will be hard to handle but Charter Oak lives to see another day. Chargers move on to the Finals.

Charter Oak 28 Highland 27

DIV 9

Rio Hondo Prep (11-1) at Vista Del Lago (9-3)

Rio Hondo Prep looks like a team on a mission. The Kares beat St. Margaret’s at home in the first round and then went on the road last week to knock off a solid Orange squad. The Kares now have to travel again out to Moreno Valley to take on Vista Del Lago. The Ravens finished third in the Sunbelt and are 9-3 overall. Vista Del Lago will be tough. A road game in the Semis is never easy. But this is nothing the Kares can’t handle. RHP moves on.

Rio Hondo Prep 27 Vista Del Lago 21

DIV 10

West Covina (10-2) at Xavier Prep (7-4)

Expect a low scoring slugfest. Both teams like to run the ball and play good defense. It should be over quick. You may have time to catch a movie after the game. West Covina never threw the ball once two weeks ago in the first round win over Paloma Valley. Xavier Prep will present a challenge but Bulldogs will churn into the Finals.

West Covina 21 Xavier Prep 17

    Sure I can claim them, I just did.
    They all played at La Serna or in the Kingdom as you & the other LS fanboys call it.

    Since you talk to him allegedly (highly doubtful), tell Jaylen its fine to claim Downey (it’s a fine school) , but then ask him which ring he likes better, his 2013 CIF Championship ring from La Serna, or his participation ring from Downey.

    Cheers!

    LS cannot claim any of those recent D1 players and if you ask Jaylen Thompson what HS he went to he will say DOWNEY , ahhahahahah the others all took the junior college route i believe , the only other person to get a scholarship right out of HS is the nephew who came back and isnt playing anymore. As recently as last year, LS has had a FS playing @Boise St, a LB @Colorado St, @DE playing @UTEP, a WR playing @Arizona, and a DB from Wash St playing in the NFL, along with a current RB/S committed to Idaho. Plus several players playing @D2,D3 level.

    That’s 6 D1 players right there, sounds like a little bit more than an ounce of talent.

    If you want to talk historically La Serna has 6 players who have either played or been drafted by an NFL team….
    Dave Dalby, Dave Cullity, Chris Dunn, Tupe Peko, Adam Snyder & Jalen Thompson.
    Which puts LS near the top of the list in the immediate local area.

    What school, not including Mater Dei & St John Bosco (who are on a whole different level) has the best winning percentage among the rest of the 370 plus school CIF-SS since 2018?

    ANSWER = LA SERNA (57-11) .838

    Powerhouse LS playing in their 6th CIF-SS Finals in the last 13 full seasons and looking to capture the school’s 3rd CIF title in school history this Friday night vs a strong and highly successful Corona Del Mar program. Should be a great one. The Kingdom vs the Sea Kings! An epic battle for the right to wear the Crown. Good luck to both teams and to all of the teams in the Finals.

    @LS Juggernaut,

    I’ll bite. What’s the difference between the Bell Gardens/Santa Fe/Whittier dominance compared to La Serna’s? Open enrollment and demographics. Plain and simple. You can’t talk about the “old way” or how things used to be because it’s simply not that way anymore and it’s only becoming more and more different. The old days of “just get better” are long gone and you can blame adults for that.

    You use La Habra as an example. Well the Freeway League is no longer beginning in 2024. And don’t say no on ever talks about them dominating the Freeway League because I have on multiple times. I’ve also talked about the imbalance in the Moore League as well.

    I admit to being an unabashed fan of La Serna boasting. That’s why, instead of keeping them in the Del Rio, they should be put in the Almont permanently. I won’t rest until George’s group has the opportunity to crow about 2,000 consecutive league wins, which of course beats God’s creation of the universe. There’s something special about braggarts, and we should all feel privileged to live in their presence.

    November 16, 2023 - 5:18 pm | Permalink

    @Tim P.

    Of course I don’t won’t El Rancho to stop playing FB. They add some credibility to the Del Rio Lg historically with their 2.5 CIF titles, which is 0.5 more than LS has, at least for now. So gotta give them props for that
    Plus, El Rancho makes a great punching bag & after 20 years of pillaging by the Kingdom the Don fans must think ER must stand for Emergency Room after all the beatdowns.

    Anyway, enough about the team that couldn’t even make the Div 144 playoffs & let’s talk about La Serna changing leagues. It’s true, LS has risen to heights never seen before in the Whitmont/Del Rio Lg. Post 1960’s. Only 1 of the 8 original Whitmont league schools have won a CIF title since 1970. La Serna in 2013, ironically La Serna also won the last one in 1967.

    Back in the 80’s Dave Newell’s Bell Gardens teams & El Rancho were the class of the league with LS a solid 3rd until Mike Fitch took over @Whittier & they had a strong run from 88-94. Then Malhstede at Santa Fe dominanted from about 95-07, with Cal have some good teams every once in a while. So, it’s pretty clear that with the right coach any of the DRL schools can become a league power for years.

    Did La Serna cry to kick Santa Fe out of the league after SF won 35 DRL games in a row from of 01-07. No, they just kicked SF a$$ finally in 08, and haven’t looked back since.

    Did Mayfair cry to kick La Mirada out of the Suburban Lg after LM won 34 in a row from 93-99. No, Mayfair just said screw it & went on a 52 games win streak from 01-09 under Fitch. La Habra won 40 straight Freeway league games from 05-14 but their still in the Freeway Lg. LB Poly won 82 straight in the Moore Lg. I haven’t ever seen anybody here talking about how SF, LM, Mayfair, LH or Poly shouldn’t have been in those league.

    The point is the other schools should be trying to follow La Serna’s & the Whittier/Mayfair example under Fitch, to rise up to the level and even overtake the powers that were BG, SF, & LM. Instead of being such crybaby losers like theRanch 18 guy. Get better, man up, instead of looking for a way out.
    From T. Peterson: In other words, still beating a dead horse. ZZZZZZ…..

    From T. Peterson: You better hope ER doesn’t drop football. Because if they drop football you’re advocating for the entire Del Rio League to drop football. And if the Del Rio League drops football La Serna is going to the Gateway or some other league that is much tougher than the Del Rio. And believe you me they won’t be dominating. They’ll compete but it won’t be anything like the Del Rio red carpet they’re walking on right now. Look, La Serna is a great program. They’ve proven it year after year. But they shouldn’t be in the Del Rio…not anymore. El Rancho is solid as well. Medrano has done a great job. Let this ER bashing go already. The back and forth is getting old. It’s a horse that has been beaten to death.

    I always give props to coach Beltran. He’s the coach that got the big LS train a rollin’ on their still in progress dominant decade & half run. I haven’t really noticed anyone on here that doesn’t have a great appreciation for coach Beltran & what he did @LS.

    He will go down as one of the great Lancer Head Ball Coaches of all-time with the likes of Coach Harry Robinson, Coach Ron Moncrief, Coach Ken LaVigne, & Coach Andy George on the Gridiron. Coach Virgil Robinson, Coach John Fien, Coach Mike Lowe, Coach Steve Hemingway, & Coach Angulo in Hoops, & Coach Vern Brock & Coach Ginger Mendez in baseball/softball respectively. #Coaching Legends of the Kingdom.

    Hey, If you would have told me back in 2009, that in 2023, LS would be 1 win away from playing in a CIF-SS Final for the 6th time in the last 13 yrs* (w/1 undefeated covid half season as the 14th year) & I would’ve told you to put down the crack pipe. Coach Beltran coached at BG for 4 years, qualified for the playoffs the last 3 years, won a league championship and advanced in the playoffs. Everyone of those things had not been done at BG the previous 8 to 10 years. Say what you want but he left that program in better condition for the next guy.
    This year he was the DC at South El Monte and helped them regain some prominence going 9-2 and making the playoffs. Too each their own but he’s accomplished some things after La Serna.

    LaSerna 28 – Burbank 21
    FINALS (2OT)

He won a championship in a division like La Habra did when they had their reign for a decade or so. I eventually met Beltran over at Bell Gardens and he seemed like an okay guy but did very little to bring them to a winning program.

    Beltran couldn’t even fit in a Ferrari let alone keep the opposing offense from scoring 38+ points against good competition. Hell, all you had to do was run a post and you’d win the game against a Beltran D. Just accept the fact that he is gone and LS has been better off ever since. Keep in mind, out of 5 of those CIF Finals appearances Beltran coached in 3 of them… so you’re really advocating for the firing of Beltran lol. What has he done since? Nothing.

    @Just An Old Fart
    A quick calpreps look shows the scores each year, it’s not that difficult. Oh and El Rancho is desperate to get out of the DRL because they can’t compete. LS parents making the program look worse than it already does (at times) , Be realistic , their schedule was set up for this exact reason, Moral wins against D2 teams in regular season so they dont see them in playoffs and that leads to “easier” playoff road, (long beach poly in 2021 did it)
    10 year anniversary of Frankie Football putting the ENTIRE program on his BACK with a PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME vs NORWALK to win it ALL, talk about a dynasty? in 10 years LS made the Finals 5 times, only 1 ring to show for it…… coaches get fired for not being able to finish the job. LS satisfied with 10 win seasons and league titles year in and year OUT. #BeltransFerrari

    If I were you, I would just worry about El Rancho 2-8 last in league! Worry about how El Rancho can get better instead of worrying what La Serna does!

    It’s ok buddy, you have a right to be upset.

    I mean ER going (2-18) vs LS the last 20 years, including an active 9 game losing streak, with all 9 L’s by 25 pts or more, and no wonder you’re obsessed with the Kingdom.

    2015 La Serna 48 El Rancho 14
    2016 La Serna 49 El Rancho 23
    2017 La Serna 42 El Rancho 17
    2018 La Serna 49 El Rancho 20
    2019 La Serna 49 El Rancho 7
    2020 La Serna 28 El Rancho 0
    2021 La Serna 42 El Rancho 7
    2022 La Serna 53 El Rancho 6
    2023 La Serna 49 El Rancho 7
    =============
    LS Dominates Dons by 34, 26, 25, 29,
    42, 28, 35, 47, & 42 pts.

    Yikes
    😂
    Hope ER doesn’t drop FB.
