Tigers Too Much for Titans

(San Marino) – South Pasadena had four players score in double figures and needed all of those points to hold off San Marino 76-66 Friday night at San Marino High.

Derek Peterson, Jack Madison and Russell Williams were the big three for the Tigers as they combined for 51 of the 76 points. Madison had a big fourth quarter scoring eight points in the final frame.

South Pas was down by one, 36-35, at halftime but outscored San Marino by 11 points in the second half to secure the victory.

San Marino came out hot leading 10-2 early behind the hot shooting of Jayden Tse and Robert Reyes. Tse had eight points in the first and Reyes had six. The Tigers battled back to tie it at 19 after one as Jacob Arias scored seven points and Madison had four.

The teams played each close to even in the second quarter. Tse hit another big three for the Titans and Madison scored five for South Pasadena. The Tigers missed opportunities in the quarter to forge ahead though as they missed nine free throws in the second. They missed 17 overall in the game. San Marino took the one-point lead into the half.

South Pasadena took control in the third quarter. Williams did work inside and outside hitting a three and converting a couple of buckets down in the paint as he scored 10 of the team’s 22 points in the quarter. Peterson also had seven in the third and the Tigers led 57-52 entering the fourth.

South Pas extended the lead to ten in the fourth quarter and was able to hold off the Titans down the stretch.

Peterson led the way with 18 points, Madison had 17 and Williams 16. Arias was the fourth Tiger in doubles with 11. For the Titans, Casey Chan was six of seven from the free throw line and led the team with 14 points. Reyes and Tse each had 11 and Jack Fuerst scored 10. Nicholas Chen added nine.

The Tigers improved to 16-5 overall with the victory and 5-1 in the Rio Hondo League. San Marino fell to 19-5 and 2-4 in the Rio.
