(La Puente) – Laron Johnson has resigned as the head football coach at La Puente after two years he confirmed Friday.
The Warriors went 8-3 overall last season including 2-1 in the Miramonte League which was good for second place. They lost in the first round of the CIV Division 14 playoffs to Bell Gardens.
La Puente went 3-7 in Johnson’s first year in 2022 and had a record of 11-10 in his two-year stint.
La Puente will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.
Such a disappointment for the kids, he turned the program around. It looks like they just needed a defensive line. Other than that though the kids look good
Probably correct , I didn’t want to overstate the case !
who got the whittier job
From T. Peterson: It’s pending board approval.
Detached Observer try head coaches make in a season what administrators make in a week\
Average cal preps rating of teams LP played -82. Genius.
@peterson With all these 7on7 tournaments kids transferring, quitting in January is late La puente going to post the position for two weeks then probably review applications for a week then call coaches in for first interview and possibly second interviews you looking like march at best for a coach to start by that time kids missed 2 months of weight lifting, doing conditioning. Unless an assistant is on campus handing the program currently
The worse coach to go 8-3 I’ve ever seen. Guy throws on his jumpsuit wobbles around the sideline everyone else calls plays, he just yelled every once in a while.
Actually it was Coach Johnson that left Temple City in the lurch with a June departure (after going 0-10) two years ago!
So late January is a big improvement; but agree anytime before early March gives schools and new coach fair opportunity to put together spring /summer program which is necessary for success. Unfortunately administrators and school boards move at the pace of the federal government in finding new coach which adds to problem.
Will Johnson find a new job ? Some great scheduling allowed him to garner good record last year, so probably the right time to bolt.
Coaching is not easy and largely thankless . Head coaches make in a season what administrators make in a month (or less) , and you have to win on the scoreboard every week!
Gabrielino hired an NFL guy last year ; he didn’t win a game , ended the season in ignominy . He got full time job at school and resigned as coach ..:::assessing the situation as hopeless ?
What’s happening at Rosemead ? They were Gabrielino’s dubious partner in last years season ending debacle and have fallen off the football mountain they had established for many years …:are they really running that back???
With sports being a year-round thing these days, coaching two years probably feels like four years. In the absence of real compensation for doing these jobs, the least we can offer these men is a hearty thank you for their services and wish them well.
Always the same comment posted every time a coach leaves. Season was just over two months ago.
Crazy
What a disservice by coach to leave this late in this now La puente probably won’t have a coach until march
From T. Peterson: This late? It’s January! I’ve seen coaches leave in June before.
