Brown In, Glaspy Out at Covina

Joe Brown is back as the head football coach at Covina.

By Tim Peterson

(Covina) – Kevin Glaspy has been removed as the head football coach and Athletic Director at Covina Fred Robledo of SGVN Sports reported Wednesday. Joe Brown, who was the offensive coordinator at Covina last year, will replace Glaspy as the head football coach.

Brown was also the head coach at Covina from 2012 through 2018.

No explanation was given by Covina High School for the changes but Glaspy has been on administrative leave from his teaching position since earlier this month. Glaspy, who has been coaching at Covina for over 30 years usually as an assistant, was also removed as track and field coach.

It has been indicated that the changes were related to an investigation regarding the SGV Bowl All-Star game which was played January 13 at Covina District Field.

Nogales head coach Matt Villasenor and Baldwin Park head coach Robert Maxie organized the game between high school seniors from the East and West. It was the second annual game. Last year’s game was played at Charter Oak High School.

Rappers performed at halftime of the game and reportedly local police were present late in the contest for crowd control.

However no illegal incidents surrounding the game have been confirmed as no information or explanation has been provided by Covina High School or Covina School District.

Glaspy led Covina to an overall record of 9-3 overall last season. The Colts lost to Charter Oak in the second round of the CIF Division 8 playoffs.

More details to follow.

    who got the Whittier job?
From T. Peterson: The school hasn’t announced it yet but the word I’m getting is it’s pending board approval.

Only a fool would try to sue over being removed from a non union position, there is absolutely no case. Again the district didn’t disclose what rules were violated that led to his removal as coach, all they did was state public info. Sorry not sorry

There was a letter distributed by Covina SD that said he was fired from two positions and put on Adninistrative Leave which typically results in losing your job. The letter was published by the Whittier Daily News. It further stated the faculty was informed in a meeting and on top of this MVS is reporting on it as well. Confident plenty other sites have it also. If you are going to sue you shut up and fire your bullets in court and not to the media. How much more public do you want?

The district did not publicly shame him, they removed him from his positions and gave him the reason they didn’t give it to anyone else, there is no public shaming going on. If he wants to come out and say it and feels it will help him then he should.

They are at will positions with no union protection, he didn’t lose his teaching job so there is very little recourse here, best if he moves on, if he did nothing wrong come out and say it, I know that’s what I would do if I was in those shoes.

The public shaming of a person without proof can be costly. Regardless of how much a coach earns he still deserves honesty about his character. I believe this can be called punitive damages. Sometimes awards go into the 80 million dollar area given to people that have been harmed.

His football coach job is not his career. No one is suing over a football job making $3k for coaching year round.
From T. Peterson: He was making about 20K additionally though. Two coaching jobs (Football, Track & Field) and Athletic Director.

What I find interesting is Covina High had a meeting with the faculty informing them that Glaspy had been fired as coach and AD. You can quietly remove a guy but why the public spanking? Why did the old lady Spanish teacher need to know? Apparently there was quite a bit of gossip among the teaching staff about the game. My bet is Glasby is preparing is own suit against Covina. A public action like that is career damaging. Covina better have proof.

I’m assuming because Glasby made agreement with promoters to use the field . But this hasn’t been clarified due to (smoke) cloud over entire affair

My thoughts exactly! Why is Covina being punished here, and not Northview and South Hills?

My question is this CDF has three high schools in its district why is Glaspy being the punished here? Northview and South Hills why aren’t they being investigated as well?

Looks like the District is going to try and lay the blame on Covina Football Boosters. Boosters better get some good lawyers. You know everyone else is saying “I had nothing to do with it”.

Agree 100 % with these observations . We should be allowed to use some deductive reasoning on these happenings , even though there is no direct statement from the school/district .
The great motivator for all districts is the threat of lawsuits (and exposure). In this case , they are caught on both sides: upset parents /stakeholders on one side and a long standing school employee with previous strong performance record. Thus the silence while attorneys figure out how to mitigate losses .
District not really concerned with doing the “right” thing on moral/ethical level.

Matt V becoming “hit and run”, promotes success and leaves in shambles . People may start to see the pattern of results and see beyond the hype …..

@Tim Peterson why do you and Fred even talk to Matt Villasenor this is really bad entertaining this person open your eyes he gives kids fake offers for about 5-10k taking advantage of most families that have no idea these are fake offers. Wish one of these kids or families would speak up about there experiences dealing with him. Mr Glaspy bought in to the whole thing this is for the kids so he approved and supported this game not knowing the true facts what this game is all about which is the money for Matt. He comes off as a nice person but he is always trying to find a way to screw someone over. At the end of the day Mr Glaspy is on leave for buying into Matt Villasenor’s antics. Nogales principal and AD will fall victims to Matt’s dirty antics.

This whole thing is a joke. The moment you trust in Maxie and Matt V this is what happens. The two get to walk away and Glaspy takes all the heat. Shame on them but then again that’s what they do. As far as money I think we are all curious as to where that money went. Someone should ask Marcel Perez and Jacob Calderon those questions if they were also in charge of this event.

I do not expect any comment from the fired coach. According to MVS he has been employed by the school for 30 years and now is on AL which means something serious happened to put a 30 year employee on it. To say the fault lies somewhere related to the All Star game does not seem to be to far a reach. It also seems many coaches were directly involved but it also seems these same coaches are now distancing themselves from the game. My guess, if thats okay, is that some parents are upset and maybe a few lawsuits being threatened. Expect more shoes to drop but history also tells us schools really clam up on stuff like this.

Hmm, interesting!!! Who are they going to go after next? Someone should check upper management and how they are recording their expenditures.

This is what happen when you have a clown posse of coaches “rent” out a field without the proper paper-work, liability insurance, or even records of where the money went.

No Illegal activities??? HAHAHA. Why do you think the poor guy got fired. That’s what happens when you bring clowns to run a show, they bring the whole circus! What a joke. MV seems to do nothing but get coaches fired these days. Stay as far from him as you can. Glaspy is a good man and deserved better than this.
From T. Peterson: You have to read the entire sentence – However no illegal incidents surrounding the game have been confirmed as no information or explanation has been provided by Covina High School or Covina School District. So if there were then confirm it. Provide details and an explanation as to why he was dismissed. Not doing so just leads to more speculation. Again, the line is no illegal incidents have been confirmed.
