Damien lost but when the opponent is JSerra that’s a tall mountain to climb. Bonita moved up with a big win over Kaiser while Northview and St. Paul stood pat. Charter Oak jumped up a spot with Bishop Amat’s loss. Rio Hondo remains unbeaten while Muir jumps Monrovia by routing Burbank in the Pacific League opener.
- Damien (3-2) – Not going to penalize the Spartans for a loss to a monster named JSerra.
- Bonita (5-0) – Bearcats on a roll; shutout Kaiser.
- Downey (4-1) – The Vikings lose their first to Red Mountain in Arizona.
- Northview (4-0) – Vikes coming off a bye; Village Christian next.
- St. Paul (2-2) – Servite will be huge test for St. Paul this week.
- Charter Oak (3-1) – Chargers have a road trip this week to San Diego.
- Bishop Amat) 2-2) – Amat battled but fell short to Rancho Cucamonga.
- Mayfair (3-2) – Mayfair can’t ride the wave over Huntington Beach.
- La Serna (3-2) – Lancers find out Crean Lutheran is no joke.
- Rio Hondo Prep (5-0) – Rain (Rainn Pollack) and Shine (Nathaniel Shine) for the Kares.
- Muir (2-2) – The Stangs open Pacific League play with a big win.
- Monrovia (4-0) – Joshua Griffiths is “The Man” in Monrovia.
Joseph Lara!
The Watcher Plenty of ‘self claimed know it alls’ get very quiet after realizing they may know little
LP,
Damn shame as you are right. Some families will learn the hard way.
Being well versed and giving appropriate counsel are not the goal in these cases
Yep thats the way my boys (3) are going. That way they can bounce if in a bad coaching situation. Thought of moving to AZ. but this is better to get some NIL cash.
Ron Vrooman, AHS stat man,
If kids are going this route, hopefully families were informed, and are well versed, as to what courses would meet both the 4 year universities admissions and NCAA admissions eligiblity requirements.
Based on observations and discussions within the school’s community, administration may not be well versed themselves.
@ Concerned Monrovian: Online Education/Credit Recovery Prep! Yep, that’s about as flimsy as it gets in public education. So much for academic rigor and integrity.
Is moist and plump the village idiot?
Did a little bit of research (aka Google):
Bylaw 226 provides that an independent study student can be eligible for sports teams as long as: “A. The student’s registration is accepted by the local school board AND; B. The courses taken by the student meet the standards adopted by the local school board and Education Code Sections 51745, et. Seq. AND; C. The administrative responsibility for the student involved in athletics shall rest with the principal of the school for which the student is competing, AND; D. The student meets all other eligibility requirements of the CIF and its member sections.”
What are the chances that a Varsity starting freshman QB, who does not attend school but does attend an independent school program, is 16 years old, due to having been held back a couple of years prior to attending high school? Similar to East Carolina QB Jake Garcia. Only difference, Jake physically attended a high school, as a matter of fact, 4 high schools.
I guess this is what high school sports has turned into? IMG type schools, high school journey men, independent studies student-athletes. We’ll soon see if neighboring districts follow suit.
Freshmen QB that’s only going to get better with that I could see more athletes coming in. But it’s football anything can happen.
I’m with you…
unacceptable rankings. literally none of the teams on that list belong on it.
Sports Man,
Wish I had your view of glass half full. Unfortunately, I let my pessimistic ways get the best of me. My glass, with cracks, is often more than half empty.
What I would like to get more info on…someone, on a different post, alluded to that the Monrovia HS Principal and AD allow that practice of a student-athlete not attend school physically, but take courses online, yet still participate in school athletics.
Can someone share more info on this? No athlete names needed for this inquiry, since there actually may be a loophole and wouldn’t warrant any action from CIF. I’m sure though that neighboring Districts would love to familiarize themselves with the process and practice.
1. Bonita (5-0) Has passed every test
2. Northview (4-0) Defense Defense Defense
3. Rio Hondo Prep (5-0) 15 CIF Titles
4. Downey (4-1) Had to travel to get lost.
5. Monrovia(4-0) Freshmen Q new coaching staff and still rolling
6. Damien (3-2) Easily be 1-3 beat Loyola by 1 at the end of the game.
7. Charter Oak (3-1) Let’s see what happens down south
8. La Serna (3-2) State hangover they are waiting for league play.
9. Mayfair (2-2) Good Q
10. Bishop Amat (2-2) On and Off who knows what team will show up
11. St Paul (2-2)l Big win over Amat and that is it.
12. Muir (2-2) Lost to 2 on this list bad
“Who cares who the best teams are!? Can we put in teams that don’t belong in a top ten into a top ten that makes me feel better” …..soft, participation trophy mentality
Schurr?
Can we get an Old School Top 10? It would be great to see you guys keep these smaller schools relevant as well as going back to the roots of MVS.
let them play and experience one of the greatest games in the world
Concerned Monrovian optimism is a good thing, and if they start losing games at least they had a winning start
Losses are losses. If you lose two games out of the first 5 even if it was against top ten teams you are out of the playoff discussion in the NCAA, yet half of your top teams have 2 losses 2 of which are in your top 5. Im not saying put Artesia #1 but rewarding a loss because you determine it was a good performance eliminates any chance of teams getting recognition for good play when they are not an elite full of D1 prospects . I dont see an LS being shut out as a good loss or Damien’s thumping deserving a gold star. BTW most of your commentors represent those -30 and worse rated teams. Its okay to reward little teams playing over their heads.
The Watcher,
Careful with getting them hopes up, false optimism may sneak up on you when you least expect it…
These rankings are truly based off schools you like personally. I have seen Northview, Charter oak solid teams. Bonita beat a division 6 or 7 Ontario christian on 2 special teams TD. Monrovia has not beat 1 quality team. La Habra is 4-1 and Covina 3-1 not ranked. Joke
From T. Peterson: La Habra isn’t in our coverage area and Covina got blown out by Northview. They would be probably be about 13 right now. Other than Ontario Christian, which is a solid team, Bonita has blown everybody out including Muir and San Dimas, who are both good teams. Monrovia is on the edge which is why they are number 12.
Where are the Monrovia coaching staff haters? I remember when he got hired and the hate and again at the beginning of the season. It could change but 4-0 right now isn’t that bad.
Bonita is on a roll? Real tough schedule. Kaiser hasn’t scored 20 points yet this season. Winless Grand Terrace may have scored 30 so far. There are several teams below #2 that would beat them IMHO.
From T. Peterson: Right but they blew both of those teams out. They also blew out San Dimas (running clock) and Muir who are both good teams. They also have 2 D1 players on the roster. Bonita is for real.
Rio at Torrance should be heckuva football game .Both squads undefeated ; last year Division 10 champ vs Division 9 champ. Torrance is better this year with more offensive weapons . Will be fun .
From T. Peterson: Great game.
