Game Night: Week 5

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday September 26

Village Christian (1-3) at Northview (4-0) (Covina District Field)

It’s been a struggle for Village Christian. The Crusaders beat San Fernando to kick off the season but have lost three straight since. Their schedule hasn’t been easy but Northview will be their toughest test yet. The Vikings are coming off a bye after winning their first four games. They’re rested and ready to go. Northview rolls.

Crescenta Valley (2-2) at Muir (2-2)

Interesting matchup in the second week of Pacific League play. Crescenta Valley beat Hoover but it was not the rout people thought it might be. Muir took care of Burbank. The Falcons may be one of the contenders to Muir in league but they would need to prove it in this game. It may be close early but Muir takes control and pulls away late. Stangs get the win.

Covina (3-1) at Santa Fe (4-1) (Pioneer)

Good start for Santa Fe. It looks like the Chiefs are picking up from where they left off last year. Covina’s only loss is to undefeated Northview and they survived Diamond Ranch. The Colts athleticism and speed will to be too much for Santa Fe. Kwame Parrish running and Jake Duronslet throwing can be overwhelming. Colts come out on top.

San Dimas (3-1) at Monrovia (4-0)

Maybe the game of the week. Monrovia can score by land and by air. Freshman quarterback Jesse Saucedo, who missed the Don Lugo game, should be back and ready to go for this one. Joshua Griffiths has been terrific. We already knew San Dimas can run it but now the Saints are throwing it too. Quarterback Brandon Meredith and running back Caleb Morquecho have been doing damage. Monrovia will light it up. The question is can the Wildcats make enough stops defensively? Maybe at first but in the end San Dimas will wear them down. Saints survive.

El Rancho (3-2) at South Hills (2-2) (Covina District Field)

Evenly matched contest. Both teams need a win before heading into league play. The teams have a common opponent in West Covina. El Rancho lost to the Bulldogs 41-14 while the Huskies beat them 16-13. Both teams are physical and like to pound the rock. Look for a hard-hitting battle that comes down to the fourth quarter. South Hills escapes with the win.

Rio Hondo Prep (5-0) at Torrance (4-0)

Big test for both teams. Rio Hondo Prep beat Torrance 29-9 last year in the regular season and then went on to win the CIF Division 9 championship. Torrance had a memorable year as well winning the Division 10 title. And for added drama both teams are undefeated coming in. Should be a high scoring affair. The Tartars, like the Kares, have been putting up points. Rio Hondo Prep’s running attack has been devastating and the Kares will light it up again. But in this game, on his night, Torrance comes out with the W. A late score wins it in the fourth.

Arcadia (1-3) at Burbank (2-2)

Both teams need a win after falling in the Pacific League opener. Arcadia has been playing out of position. Once the Apaches get all of their guys back they should be good. Hector Valencia has returned to Burbank and seems to have the Bulldogs back on the right track. Arcadia keeps it close, limits the turnovers and grinds out a win.

Charter Oak (3-1) at Mira Mesa (0-4)

Mira Misa will be a nice trip down to San Diego for the Chargers-even nicer when they take it to the Marauders on the field. Mira Mesa just doesn’t match up to Corin Berry, Legend Lyons and company. Charter Oak ends it early and heads out for a delicious post-game meal. Charter Oak in cruise control.
