(El Monte) – Oscar Lopez fired a complete game shutout to lead Arroyo to a 1-0 win over visiting South El Monte Wednesday in Mission Valley League action.

Lopez allowed just two hits and struck out nine while walking three. He had to be at his best to outduel Anthony Mata who gave up just one earned run for South El Monte. Mata allowed only three hits and fanned six.

Arroyo’s only run came in the second inning. Ironically Lopez scored the only run as he singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice by Riley MacMillan. He scored on single by Andres Mardueno.

Lopez made the run stand up the rest of the way. Twice the Eagles got a runner to third base but both times the freshman struck out the final batters in the frame to get out of the jam. He seemed to get stronger as the game wore on retiring the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

South El Monte’s only hits came on a double by Isaac Piceno in the fourth inning and a single by Bobby Rojas in the fifth.

South El Monte had a golden opportunity in the first inning when with one out Emiliano Gonzalez reached on an error and Rojas walked. Both runners advanced on a double steal to put runners on second and third but Lopez struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Knights as they improved to 7-5 overall and more importantly 2-0 in the Mission Valley league. South El Monte fell to 6-8 and 1-1.
