Glendora at San Dimas
San Dimas will look a whole lot different this year. The Saints have a new coach in Dylan O’Leary and a new offense as well. The old Wing T is a thing of the past. Sophomore quarterback Kris Saris will be airing it out and he has some nice weapons including receiver Jacob Gallegos. Gallegos had a big season at running back last year but with the new offense is moving out to receiver. Sebastain Lawrence is returning at quarterback for Glendora as the Tartans try to bounce back from a tough year. San Dimas is a tough place to start. The Saints open up with a victory.

Los Altos at Diamond Ranch
Los Altos has had a really good summer. Quarterback Luke Rodriguez is set to take the reins from Diego Castillo. With running back Evan Rojas and receiver Benjamin Cortez also in the mix the Conquerors should have a potent offense. Diamond Ranch is trying to get back on track after a rough season last year. The Panthers will try to run the ball with Cory Wilson and Tristan Kinney. Beating Los Altos right out of the gate might be too much to ask. Los Altos kicks things off with a victory.

Friday August 21
La Serna at Baldwin Park
Great opening night matchup. La Serna is a perennial power and will face an up-and-coming Baldwin Park team that made it to the CIF Championship game last year. Both teams can score. It may end up being a shootout with quarterbacks Lequand Jackson for the Braves and La Serna’s Grady Long leading the charge. Baldwin Park has plenty of other weapons as well including running back Jacory Coleman. It may come down to the fourth quarter. La Serna holds on for the win.

Rio Hondo Prep at Schurr
Rio Hondo Prep lost a lot of players to graduation but the Kares are still the Kares. Three straight championships is proof of that. Last year Rio Hondo Prep beat Schurr in a defensive struggle. Look for more of the same as each team will try to break through early. The Kares should able to contain Schurr quarterback Jacob Torres and offensively they’ll wear the Spartans out with the ground and pound. The Kares’ Christian Lee will make a big play. Rio Hondo Prep gets the W.

Muir at Bonita
A little luster was taken off the game when it was learned that Bonita quarterback Isaiah Guerrero will have to miss the game due to the sit out period for transfers. Muir also picked up a transfer quarterback when highly touted Kaiden Agbunag came over from Arizona. He should be ready to go. However, both teams have other options offensively. Running back Joseph Lara is set to have a big year for Bonita and the Mustangs have several playmakers including Noah Bozeman. With Guerrero out, Muir should be able to hold Bonita in check. If the Stangs can do enough offensively they’ll come out on top.

Northview at Thousand Oaks
The last couple of years Northview has been known to schedule up. Thousand Oaks is another example of that. The Lancers went 8-3 overall last year and 4-1 in the Conejo Coast League just behind 5-0 Westlake. The Vikings had a battle going on for the starting quarterback position and they are still working through that. They should be able to run the ball though with Aaron Guillen behind a solid offensive line led by Zeke Lucero. The Vikings have a shot. They always play compete with the elite teams but beating Thousand Oaks on the road might be too big of a hill to climb. Thousand Oaks is ranked number 52 in California. The Lancers win at home.

South Hills at El Rancho
Both teams have been active on the passing circuit. Fabian Marez has been slinging it for South Hills while Adrian Lopez has been airing it out for the Dons. Last year El Rancho won a defensive slugfest 13-7. There should be more points scored this year. Both teams have been humming on offense. If the Huskies can score early on a big strike from Marez and keep their foot on the pedal it may be tough for El Rancho to come back. South Hills gets the win on the road.

Bishop Amat at St. Paul
Bishop Amat has been fueled by quarterback Dylan D’Epifanio who has had a great off season. The Lancers, led by head coach Kory Minor, have looked polished in spring and summer workouts. Austin Montoya, who was at Schurr last season, has taken over as the head coach at St. Paul. The Swordsmen have been competing this summer as well and have looked solid. Quarterback Joshua Villalta has won the starting job and is ready to lead St. Paul into battle. Bishop Amat rolled St. Paul 42-14 last year in the opener and this could be more of the same. If anything, Bishop Amat looks better. The Lancers take the lead early and never look back.

Agbunag’s name isn’t even on the transfer page anymore. Either an insane situation happens where Moreno somehow plays for Muir tonight or they play a QB no one has ever heard of and in that case, Bonita wins this game by multiple touchdowns.

I’m sure Moreno started practicing with Maranatha and I’m sure the reporting of him transferring is accurate.. But he’s still not listed on the CIF website either. I can’t help but wonder if he ever even started to go to school at Maranatha and also wondering there’s a chance he’s still a Muir student and plays come Friday???
21 of the 26 teams playing Thursday are double digiters. So I guess the Mid should close up shop so you can relax? Go Oilers
I just checked the CIF transfer page and Kaiden Agbunag’s form is incomplete it says so if they can’t get him cleared by the game tomorrow, who do they play? Moreno transferred and the Cathedral transfer is on sit out period.
It doesn’t help Montebello being in division double digits 12,13 14 15 16 whatever. Relax!

Somehow Schurr always makes the list. Montebello the other school in Montebello can’t even make the quick hit list? They also play tonight against another local school Garfield.
From T. Peterson: Schurr made the list because they play Rio Hondo Prep – a team that has won three straight CIF titles. That’s a huge game. When I write “Game Night” I pick about 20 local games. I don’t specifically select one team over the other. You can’t list them all. That being said I added Montebello.
Sorry if you’ve already commented on this, but I read an article yesterday that several of these transfers have not been cleared yet. Some are doing the sit out period, but others have been tagged “incomplete.”
Bonita will beat Muir , maybe by a lot . Muir offense will struggle .

My bad. I stand corrected. Got my Pasadena private schools mixed up. But he’s not on the Maranatha transfer portal either. So my question still stands. Perhaps he worked out with Maranatha but can still play at Muir?? What a world we live in!
BP QB not cleared either. Interesting because he said in his interview with mid valley that he went there to put up numbers in Maxie’s offense. A sit out wouldn’t afford him that opportunity.
With the Az transfer not cleared at Muir and the Muir transfer not cleared at La Salle, I wonder if there is any chance Muir may be starting their guy that worked with them all summer at QB???!!!!

Of course I know your standards are exceedingly low .Crowing about D14 victories is the quintessential low floor in high school football. How difficult is it to understand that D14 is the bottom 7% of high school teams .
Pioneer is a great story and they have reshaped their identity a bit with new CIF format . A little sensible humility would broaden this appreciation.
Btw the 2018 team that went 6-4 and missed playoffs on last second loss to Glenn would have drill-pressed the the 24 and 25 squads that had playoff success .
Nice to see Mr. Riser not missing a beat by declaring Glendale a “good team.” Well spoken by the dean of area sports.
Kind of a misleading stat, the majority of those INT’s were thrown against La Serna and Pacifica 4 and 5 respectively. South Hills threw 2 INT’s against ER in that opener at SoFi.. ER is being severely underrated, this is one of the better groups they’ve had in years, everyone is back plus a couple of solid transfers.
I will guarentee one thing. Even though Santa Fe walloped a good Glendale team they won’t do that against Pioneer that has 8 playoff wins in the last two seasons.

I think that this will be a good test for how good/bad Matty V is at coaching because on paper Muir should win this game with the Bonita QB situation. If this was last year’s Muir team or this year’s with Lance Mitchell as the head coach, they almost certainly win this game I think but we’ll see how it is with Matty V. It’s gonna be interesting because I’ve only heard bad things about him over the offseason but like I said Muir should win this game on paper I think. Overall we will find out what kind of coach Matty V will be over this year Friday night I think.
The pads are finally coming on. The passing tournaments have told us little about how teams will operate when bodies are slamming and fatigue is a factor. If we judge by the reputation of the teams’ coaches, it’s easy to see that the game of the week, LS at BP, is a toss-up. The weekend’s #2 matchup, Muir at Bonita, can be gauged by noting that Steve Bogan is clearly superior to Matty V, meaning that even with the QB situation in flux, the Bearcats should prevail.
To further illustrate the role of coaching, observe that LB Poly, a perennial power in the past, is a decided underdog to Downey. That would not be the case 20 years ago, but the coaching fall-off at Poly and the coaching ascendance of Downey has made it so.
Just throwing it out there, but Workman will be playing our first home game on campus in the school’s history!!!!
Lasr season ER completed more passes to the defense than to their own guys especially in the red zone. ER’s offense was too predictable and DB’s just had to sit back and catch the fly ball. If ER can run the ball in the red zone thay have a chance. If they can’t this will be over at the half.
