1—Jeanie Buss is contesting family’s sale of stake in the Los Angeles Lakers.

3—Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs (his 28th and 29th of the season) and finished with four hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 11-5.
4—Former San Gabriel quarterback Frankie Bernard turns 40 today. Bernard led the Matadors on their CIF run in 2003 with victories over Arroyo, La Serna, and Santa Fe.
5—Cubs walk off White Sox in Crosstown Classic — Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his first career walk-off home run (a two-run shot in the 10th inning) as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 7-5 win over the White Sox at Wrigley Field. Crow-Armstrong also reached back-to-back 30-30 seasons.
6—“Just throwing it out there, but Workman will be playing our first home game on campus in the school’s history!!!!”—MVS commenter, “Teach.” Western Christian comes to play the Lobos this Friday at 7:PM. Note: Workman opened in 1967
7—On this day in 1951 3’7″ St. Louis Browns pinch hitter Eddie Gaedel becomes the smallest man ever to appear in a Major League baseball game. Detroit Tiger pitcher Bob Cain walked him on four straight pitches. Two days later the American League banned owner Bill Veeck from ever using Gaedel again calling him a “promotional attraction”.
8—New York Mets rookie right fielder Carson Benge threw out two San Diego Padres runners at home plate on consecutive plays in the first inning of Monday night’s (August 17, 2026) game at Citi Field. Benge threw out Jake Cronenworth on a 99.9 mph chuck. On the next play he fired a 103.9 mph missile to get Many Machado.
9—Workman High School’s lone alumnus to make it to the NFL is former USC/Carolina Panther is tackle Norberto Garrido, who also played at Mt. Sac. Garrido seen four years (1996-1999) with the Panthers, and one (2000) with the Arizona Cardinals.
