You would of have thought we were in Orange County or the Inland Empire or at one of the city schools last Thursday night. But no, we were right here in the San Gabriel Valley standing on the sidelines in Monrovia watching the Wildcats take on Glendora.

Earthquakes and hurricanes in the East, 110 degrees in the West and the Dodgers won five straight. It’s the end of the world as we know it…and I feel fine.

Less than two weeks and counting…this Friday night there will be numerous scrimmages through out the area and then the following Thursday (September 1), the high school football season kicks off.

The opening kick off for high school football is still a couple of weeks away. All the passing circuits are completed and fall camp is underway. Most teams will be throwing on the helmet and pads soon as they begin the stretch run to zero week.

NFL Hall of Fame weekend didn’t seem the same without the game. The seven inductees were there in Canton, Ohio Saturday along with the presenters – the only thing missing was the fans.

We’ve hit the dead period for several area high school football teams. Although there is no set dead period now with the new CIF rules in place most teams still go dark in late July and into early August.

I heard one radio talking head say that if the USA Women’s Soccer team can win the World Cup it would revitalize the sport just like it did in 1999. Say What?

After nine hours in the baking sun, watching hundreds of passes, countless touchdowns, dozens of routes, close to 100 coaches (counting assistants), and 24 teams compete at the Arroyo SGV Shootout on Saturday you have to take a step back and think what it all means.
