San Marino Slugs Schurr 42-7

By Corey Kwok
(San Marino) – San Marino (10-1) scored on its first five possessions and converted on all eight third-down situations towards a 35-7 lead into the fourth before finishing with a 42-7 rout of Schurr to advance into the CIFSS Mid-Valley Division quarterfinals.
For consecutive weeks, the same three Titans evenly split six touchdowns. Nick Gott, Ryan Wood, and quarterback Matt Wofford each struck paydirt twice, as this trio did exactly that to end the regular season last Friday night against South Pasadena in a 43-8 rout.
Eric Perez pushed forward for an eight yard gain on the first play from scrimmage of the game for the Spartans before quarterback Ricardo Fonseca snuck past the first down stick, only to cough it up to Zach Bowles, who later recovered another fumble in the final stanza for the Titans.
Two plays later after an 11-yard first down run by Wood, Wofford broke loose into the endzone to get San Marino on the board just 77 seconds into the game (at 10:43 in the first quarter.
The Titans then forced Schurr into a three -and-out before capping an eight play, 60 yard, and 3:35 scoring drive when Wood chopped a clear path north to the house for a 14-0 advantage.
Schurr again was forced to punt after three plays and the Titans spun off a 10 play, 56 yard march into the second frame that culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Gott.
Wofford had 23 carries for 149 yards while Wood missed him by two yards, tallying up 147 yards over 24 carries as this duo led another punishing Titan ground assault, combining for 296 of their team’s 339 rushing yards.
Schurr picked up some rhythm through the air as Fonseca completed four straight passes en route to a 19-yard scoring strike to Jose Aguero with 21 seconds left in the first half. Fonseca finished completing nine of 14 for 112 yards and one touchdown.
San Marino went to work on its ensuing drive that started the second half, one where they controlled possession for 7:15 by pounding the rock on all 15 plays and 67 yards of it and capped with Gott’s second touchdown on a one-yard scamper.
San Marino had a 27-10 edge on first downs and yielded just 39 rushing yards to Schurr. The game played smoothly from kickoff and was in the books within an hour and 47 minutes. Both teams were penalty free into the second half and faulted just once apiece the whole game.
