(Whittier)- Alexander Vasquez’ field goal with 00.03 seconds left lifted La Serna to a 38-35 win over Westlake Thursday night at California High.
The Lancers let a 21 point lead get away in the fourth quarter. La Serna was up 35-14 with under six minutes left in the fourth, when Westlake scored three touchdowns within a one minute and one second span.
***Frankie Palmer, as usual, was the catalyst for La Serna. He completed 15 of 22 for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 16 times for 146 yards and a score.
***After Palmer capped an 82 yard drive with a six yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left in the half to give La Serna a 21-7 lead, Westlake’s Andre Baccellia returned the kick off 90 yards for a touchdown as the time on the first half clock ran out.
***Westlake cut the lead to 35-21 with 5:51 left in the fourth, when Lexi Isham returned a blocked punt 48 yards for a score.
***Westlake recovered the ensuing onside kick and two plays later Malik Henry hit Nick Rodriguez for a five-yard scoring strike.
***La Serna failed to cover the follwing deep kick off and Westlake took over at the La Serna six yard line where Henry found Baccellia for a touchdown and just like that it was 35-35.
***On La Serna’s game winning drive the Lancers were helped by consecutive penalties of pass interference and unsportsmanlike conduct that set them up at the Westlake nine yard line.
***Bryce Oliver had 13 carries and 70 yards for La Serna.
***La Serna jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 26-yard touchdown run by Kevin Ramos and a two-yard touchdown pass from Palmer to Luis Camacho.
***Joel Viera picked off a pass and returned it 37 yards down to the Westlake one-yard line late in the third quarter that led to a Palmer TD pass to D’Andre Sanchez that out the Lancers up 35-14.
***With the win La Serna improves to 4-0. The Lancers will take on Norco next week. Westlake fell to 2-2.
