The Mary Star team that the Alhambra Moors encountered last Thursday night was not a squad typical of generations past, but rather one that’s brimming with offensive firepower in a 52-32 win over the Moors at San Gabriel High School.
The San Pedro-based Stars proved that their 63-0 opening-game victory over L.A. Marshall wasn’t a fluke, as they pounded away at an Alhambra defense which once again struggled to stop the run.
After the Moors fell behind, 26-6, late in the second quarter, they fought back tenaciously and cut Mary Star’s lead to 38-32 with 8:24 left in the game. However, the Stars scored two late touchdowns to secure the win in a nonleague game.
Mary Star improved its record to 2-0, while Alhambra fell to 0-2 for the season. The Stars’ senior tailback, Nathan Chavez, carried the ball 26 times for 238 yards and four touchdowns, and sophomore quarterback Santiago Martinez connected on nine of 13 passes for 157 yards and three more scores.
Alhambra’s quarterback, Michael Gonzalez, completed 15 of 28 passes for 226 yards and four TD’s. Slot man Johnny Thang totaled 78 yards on four catches—all of which went for touchdowns—and he also scored on an 81-yard kickoff return to account for nearly all of his team’s points.
Turnovers proved costly for the Moors, as the Stars converted three fumble recoveries into touchdowns. Mary Star piled up 442 yards in total offense, while Alhambra gained a total of 322 yards.
The kickoff time for Alhambra’s game against Temple City on Thursday has been changed to 3:15 due to the current shortage of officials. The game is supposed to be the first one for AHS at newly-renovated Moor Field.
