Due to a fight at the end of the Rosemead-Gabrielino game Friday night both teams were suspended and had to forfeit this week’s games. The only Mission Valley League game this week is South El Monte at Mt. View.
Rosemead and Gabrielino both receive losses for this week and Arroyo and El Monte both get wins.
Final records for these four teams:
Arroyo 6-4 (5-0 in MVL)
El Monte 4-6 (3-2 in MVL)
Rosemead 2-8 (1-4 in MVL)
Gabrielino 0-10 (0-5 in MVL)
Mission valley is a joke
Omg so sad but true! I feel for our kiddos. They put on a good persona in acting like they care but they really don’t. Why did they get rid of former staff?
We as parents always get dismissed when we want to bring awareness to real issues we see. Its very sad.
I’m pretty sure Gabrielino doesn’t care about there football program. Too busy fulfilling academics they forget about their athletes. Until something like this happens.
So who makes playoffs because of this ??
Current A.D. is Harold Sanin and Melissa Lopez via website
Yes I believe so
Ghs current athletic director is the school principal’s wife. Conflict of interest ?
* guy
Thanks for the correction , CalPreps doesn’t name coaches prior to 2005 ; seemed unlikely that it was same gut throughout the early years ….. I stand corrected !
Sorry you’ve had to live through the last two years of Panther demise . Can’t understand why certain decisions were made , but the suffering is real both in sportsmanship and quality of play !
I did t see any of their games….can you say more about their staff that made you question them ? The NFL approach usually doesn’t work with lowest level high school football and you really have to teach basic fundamentals and techniques , then implodes without success …
Still you imply , wondering what you really observed
Both schools have become some of the worst programs in the area. This is partly because they are not taught core values and morals like before. 2-8 doesn’t determine the success of the season but the way they act definitely does. Very selfish
I’m sure the issues over there at gab are an AD issue. Who is there AD? Hiring the right people is crucial especially for football. I’m sure their principal can do something to help over see program but it really comes down to the people doing their job right. In this case seems like they don’t know what they’re doing anymore or the people in charge of athletics obviously don’t know how to do their job.
As a long time Rosemead panther it is embarrassing to say nonetheless. Why are we fighting with this team. Makes no sense and extremely devastating for seniors involved
I wouldn’t push it as far as saying that this is entirely an admin issue. I heard that most of their admin is new. However, definitely this is an A.D. issue and the lack of care for whoever admin has been there. At least from what I’ve heard is that GHS stopped caring about their football program years ago. Whats up with all the weird hires the last five years. Whats up with the staff from this year? They need someone emotionally invested in helping rebuild this program at this point cause its in flames
Any average coach put in this situation would have won one game with that light schedule. Again any average coach. Gab needs to do better
To say their principal was the most successful coach there is definitely an overstatement. There really has only been two coaches at that campus the last three decades. He had be better than one other guy. Very short history with that program. It is definitely an AD issue and whoever is in charge of hiring. It seems like GHS doesn’t care about football anymore or their roots. Its seemed that way with since Saino. It was a sinking ship. 1 league title in 30 years. 1 playoff appearance in 20 years to get routed. This program doesn’t care anymore. How come no alumni want to coach here? Thats is very sad. You are right when you say every athletics program goes through ups and downs. But not GHS. They make no effort when it come to their football program.
They have made playoffs only once in the last 20 years , and they were blown out in that appearance . Tradition ?
Gabrielino’s issues at this point are definitely NOT an admin issue. They have a principal that was the first and most successful football coach at the school, they have an AP was was a very successful Girls basketball coach at Wilson/LA, and ADs that truly care about athletics. The kids and the school culture are changing for the better this school year it looks like from the outside, but that takes time. Football drives athletics at most schools. It is the highest profile sport, it’s first up on the calendar, and it can provide a great jump start to the culture of the school. Having competed against Gabrielino in multiple sports since they started in the MVL in 1996-97, they have had a number of great teams and coaches in almost every sport-including football. Every public school goes thru ups and downs in athletics-they are no different. They have dominated the MVL at times in Girls Soccer, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Baseball, Girls Volleyball and Track. Football was very competitive in the late 90’s thru the 2000’s. They have struggled lately with numbers, but they have athletes. Hard to judge this season with the coaching situation-they had almost NO chance for any success with the coach bailing in June and the new coach not getting hired until July. Lets see if the staff stays and has the opportunity to build a program.
No, you are wrong DO. Vince was the first EVER football coach at GHS. Started in 1994 and lasted more than 10 years as the head coach before sorry Sanin took over.
*not
It the first ever , but yes from like 2005- 2009? when Saino came in ……
Gab was good prior to 2005 , only one playoff appearance since ( first round blow out )
Current admin at Gabrielino is Vince Lopez, first ever head football coach at Gabrielino.
He was running backs coach on that team .
They had to forfeit game at beginning of season . They put up huge numbers against suspect competition , then lost with no offense early in playoffs . When that staff left Sierra Vista was broken , going winless the next year getting out scored 374 -30
That’s not program building in my view
@ Al that Glitters isn’t Gold
“No real success in his coaching roles except tainted Sierra Vista year 2019 that left program in complete disarray.”
What connection does Slayton have with tainted Sierra Vista? and why is it that you say that Sierra Vista is tainted?
I’ve been holding off commenting as I’m slightly less detached when it comes to these two schools . And I was derided by some when I brought these issues to bear several months ago on this site .
First let me say that the situation for each school is different . Rosemead was in pretty good shape when Slayton took over ; decision was head scratcher from beginning with co -head coaches announced at one time . No real success in his coaching roles except tainted Sierra Vista year 2019 that left program in complete disarray. 2022 was slide into depths of mediocrity, 25 point backwards move on CalPreps , losing prominence in MVL , etc . I guess a D14 playoff win gifted by new format allowed administrators to rationalize this steep decline . But this year has been even worse in performance and more importantly deportment!. Forfeit, transfer situation and now on field brawl.
Gabrielino was in difficult situation when new hire bolted from program mid summer and new coach in difficult situation. Some improvement noted as season progressed, but enough ?? And antics vs Rosemead put damper on improvement , winless season in every way.
They’re were other alternatives for these schools . Coaches that had successfully helped to build programs in the past Sources tell me one Coordinator now helping OC team on historic run was interested amongst others .
I don’t think administrators really understand what it takes to build program success .They have many agendas . They see the package (NFL experience , etc ) and not the substance . In some ways this is the easy way of decision making , but it’s ultimate results often are troubling and painful for alumni and boosters !
This is all a reflection on leadership. The last few years have been a joke for Gabrielino’s football teams. They’ve had a rotating door for coaches. The newest one has an NFL background but seems more concerned with his image (wears sunglasses at night games) and posting on social media about himself and his long-gone glory days of being on an NFL team practice squad 🙄 than he does with taking coaching seriously. He doesn’t seem to impact the team in a positive way at all. A 0-10 season is ridiculous!
All in all, the administration has not done their job to support the athletics programs at all, nor do they invest in their athletic programs. (That’s why all the good athletes leave. ) The kids who are left see and feel the lack of care…. Thus, the pride in themselves and their school is missing.
More parents need to come together to motivate the school and district to make big changes in the future. Gabrielino needs to get themselves together.
Make it a non league game
few years ago Fullerton hs had great great talent with 3 players who could control league games , except in one point loss to La Habra! Well failure to have discipline ended all dreams of winning a CIF Championship when 2 best ( or 2 of 3) players on the field left the sideline and joined in on a fight! Big difference between this weakness Rosemead vs whovever? and Fullerton heading into final four without both standout players on offense and defense. One of them , I almost sure, scholarship U of Utah. Without those two they lose to ?? maybe St Margaret ( haha or is that girls school?) in very very close game! I suggest Fullerton wins by several points or more if team was disciplined.
who is head coach at Rosemead now
From T Peterson: Arlin Slayton
sad to agree but this problem is happening at many schools in our area…
ghs captain nailed it ” they care more about test scores than athletes”
test scores get the school $$$… athletes don’t pay the bills untill they see how much money they lose on friday nights bc people stop showing up
I know this is not an ideal solution to the problem but couldn’t Arroyo & El Monte play again? If I was a player, especially a Senior I’d rather have a repeat game instead of no game.Only real problem I see is getting kids banged up for the playoffs.
Sucks for Arroyo and El Monte. They lost a game. Especially the seniors.
0-10. Forfeit last game of the season. No homecoming game. Says it all. It has fallen to pieces
Yes, GHS has become Rosemead. In my opinion, it has to do with the kids not respecting their, team, coach, admin and school. Past GHS teams also hated Rosemead but we never fought them because we respected our school and had bigger goals. That is not the case now and that falls on the GHS leadership. Sadly, the direction of the program and leadership has been disappointing the last couple of years. Seems like admin only cares about high test scores and has forgotten about the athletes.
Both neighboring schools should be ashamed. They have lost their culture. And now failed programs. Who’s going to want to play next year?
Embarrassing!!! When will these kids be held accountable. Never have I seen such students get away with unacceptable behavior on campus in three decade’s. Unfortunately, we have become Rosemead in the way we act.
Sad to see what has happened to Gabrielino Football. Ghs admin is disconnected from alumni and the community.
Slayton is not a Rosemead guy.
What a shame on both schools that would let this happen. Now four schools lose week 10 and two schools lose senior night that honors all the seniors in the band, cheer squad and football team. Not good and all this can be prevented if the right people are in charge. I’ll just leave it at that. Joke!!!
Worst team in Rosemead history. Bad character and a losing record? Its is embarrassing and the coach and AD need to be accountable.
Someone on another thread said we shouldn’t call HS athletes “dumb”. Looks like we are going to have find another word.
Rose-Gabe both deserved their penality. Too bad two other schools have to suffer.
This whole area has gone to the dumpster. All these schools share the same kids.
Keppel, Gab, Rosemead, Alhambra, Temple City. 5 schools with a combined total of 5 wins.
