(Montebello) – Schurr scored twice on the ground and twice through the air in a 27-14 win over Chino Thursday night at Ken Davis Field.

It was balanced attack but also a tale of two halves for the Spartans. Schurr went to the running attack in the first half as Elias Navarro scored on runs of three yards and one yard. Quarterback Joseph Alvarado only threw the ball three times in the first half for 14 yards.

But in the second half the Spartans aired it out. Alvarado threw touchdown passes of 22 and 30 yards to Jordan Menjivar and had over 100 yards passing in the half. Alvardo finished the night 10 of 15 for 118 yards and the two scores.

Schurr took advantage of a Chino turnover in the first quarter to get on the board first. The Cowboys fumbled on their own 27-yard line on its opening possession and the Spartans fell on it. Eight plays later Navarro scored on a three-yard run.

On the Spartans next series they drove 77 yards on 11 plays and were aided be a personal foul penalty to take a 14-0 lead. This time Navarro plowed in from the one with 5:22 left in the second quarter.

Albert Chavez also forced another Chino turnover with an interception and Schurr took the two-score lead into the half.

Schurr took the opening possession in the third quarter and marched 55 yards on 7 plays with Alvarado finding Menjivar on a 22-yard TD strike. The extra point was missed but the Spartans were still up 20 with just over eight minutes left in the third.

Chino finally got off the floor early in the fourth quarter when CJ Gibson hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Max Barroso to cap a 59-yard drive.

But the Spartans put any Cowboy comeback hopes to rest by responding with a 78-yard touchdown drive. Menjivar worked his way wide open in the corner of the end zone and Alvarado found him for a 30-yard score with 5:12 left.

For Schurr Mateo Carrasco had 24 yards on the ground and caught a pass for 21 yards to add to the offensive stats. Menjivar had the two big touchdown receptions for 52 yards.

Schurr improved to 3-1 with the win while Chino is still seeking its first victory as it fell to 0-4.
