(Montebello) – Schurr’s defense scored two touchdowns and the offense did the rest as the Spartans rolled to a 35-2 rout of Bell Gardens Friday night. With the victory Schurr wrapped up the Almont League title with a perfect record of 5-0.

Alberto Chavez turned two Bell Gardens turnovers into two touchdowns. After Schurr scored first on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Torres to Caesar Aguila with 2:43 left in the first quarter Chavez came up huge on defense.

He picked off a pass from Michael Mendoza and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. The pick six came just 15 seconds after Torres’ touchdown pass and the Spartans were up 14-0.

In the second quarter Tyler Higashi capped a 55-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown blast to put Schurr up 21-0 with 7:30 left in the quarter.

The Spartans were on the verge of another score after a bad Bell Gardens snap left them on a short field. But Torres was intercepted in the end zone by the Lancers’ Bryant Rios to stop the threat. Schurr took the 21-point lead into the break at halftime.

In the third quarter with 6:00 left Torres connected with Chavez for a 21-yard catch and run to make it 27-0 after the extra point was missed.

Early in the fourth quarter Chavez worked his defensive magic again. He scooped up a fumble and returned it 48 yards for a score. A two-point pass from Torres to Higashi on the conversion made it 35-0 and started the running clock.

Late in the game after Schurr had emptied its bench Luciano Torres, in relief of Jocob Torres, was sacked in the end zone and Bell Gardens recorded a safety.

For Schurr Chavez had two receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown to go with his two defensive scores. Aguila had five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown and Jacob Torres threw for 114 yards and two touchdowns and the interception.

Schurr held Bell Gardens to 17 yards passing. Daniel Tovar led the rushing attack with 67 yards on six carries but the Lancers were never able to get anything going against Schurr’s stout defense.

The Spartans finished the season 7-3 overall and will find out where they will land in the playoffs Sunday when the CIF pairings are announced. Bell Gardens ended up the regular season at 4-1 in league and 7-3 overall. They also qualified for the playoffs.

    Same stuff different year for Schurr high school. If there were no playoffs and sure would be an amazing team… Just going to show you that pounding your chest and pretending to be great doesn’t fabricate to wins… Better luck next year…

    @Anon?
    Schurr will be dead on Saturday morning as usual. Put that in stone. You guys are nothing but regular season champs… How’s that for higher standards? DELETED will be eating a bag of carrots. Come Saturday morning…. Keep pounding your inflated chest. There’s nothing there.

    Gardunos is dead just like Montebello. Monkeybello has been around for 100+ years and never won crap. D13 so embarrassing to play. Schurr has higher standards. The alumni is not happy we are in D7.

    With Calpreps not being available to us for free, it’s going to be hard to tell just how good or bad a playoff opponent is. It makes some of us wonder if CIF is happy with fans not knowing the power ratings of the various teams. We’ll know more about this if Schurr manages to win its first round game. Everyone knows that the Spartans are supposed to be effectively gone from the tournament almost as fast as its players can take the field, so if this isn’t the case, blame the honchos in Los Alamitos.
