[El Monte] I sat down with another Arroyo triathlete – this time a freshman, Oscar Lopez. Lopez, as a freshman, has lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He got injured in week three against Bolsa Grande and had thrown for a touchdown and an interception before the injury.

Lopez came off the bench for the basketball team helping them win a Mission Valley league title averaging seven points and 10 rebounds. This season in baseball, in which he helped the team win a league title, he’s leading the team in batting at .390 with a homerun and 21 RBIs. On the mound he’s gone 4-2 with a 1.30 earned run average. Arroyo travels to AB Miller in the first round of the playoffs this week.

Q: What’s up kid, how’s it going?

A: Going great. I’m focusing on my craft and getting better every day.

Q: How does it feel to be a varsity athlete in all three major sports as a freshman?

A: Feels great. I would like to thank my coaches and family for all the support. This is what I’m made to do.

Q: You have to pick one. Which sport do you keep playing?

A: It would be football because it was my first sport and I always had a strong love for the game.

Q: Who do you model your game after?

A: I model my game after Tom Brady – to play smart and to not play with fear.

Q: How would your teammates and coaches describe you?

A: They would describe me as hard working and clutch.

Q: What is your goal for the team and you personally this upcoming football season?

A: Goal for this upcoming season is to win league and go on a playoff run.

Q: What is the biggest lesson you have learned from sports so far?

A: Biggest lesson I’ve learned is to always stay humble and be hungry for your goals

Q: How do you handle the pressure of playing in high-stakes games?

A: By staying calm and keeping my composure. I’ve been dealing with pressure all my life. It’s nothing new.

Q: You’re still a freshman but what are your plans after high school when it comes to sports?

A: Plans after high school is to get a scholarship and play ball at a good college, either for football or baseball.

Q: Anything else you would like to say or want us to know?

A: Only 14, remember that. It only goes up from here.
