Baldwin Park Principal Deborah Madrigal’s statement on Baldwin Park securing the team name “Braves”.
By Tim Peterson
(Baldwin Park) – After plenty of hard work in navigating the process of California Assembly Bill 3074, which requires public schools to discontinue the use of certain Native American mascots and team names unless a partnership is established with a federally recognized tribe, Baldwin Park High School was able to secure the consent to continue the use of the “Braves” name. The federally recognized Pala Band of Mission Indians (Pala Tribe) has agreed to partner with Baldwin Park High School Principal Deborah Madrigal said in a statement Tuesday.

Wrong. There are 154 voters that were kicked off for DELETED!So BP Pricipal if you want to be associated with a DELETED tribe just to keep your name.If you lay with dogs you will bit.
There is about 300 voters that make up the Pala Indian tribe give or take a few. That that few people can overrule the state is wild. What else can they do? And does Baldwin Park sit on an Indian Reservation? Partnering with the tribe that makes their living off of gambling does not seem to be the best idea.
I love Pala . The resort is relaxed and pleasant and hasn’t changed much in years ; much the same can be said for the casino . And I’m totally behind the community rallying to maintain the BP name .
They found a loophole to be able to maintain the name . They’ve completed that process. There is no intrinsic , geographic or historical relationship between Pala and the city or land of BP. This is a government mandated enforcement; the hours that district officials and school administrators (who have six figure salaries ) and teachers spend are funded by tax dollars, There will be many hours devoted to this “implementation” . I don’t see this as appropriate.
Pala has had a decreasing market share of gaming market the last decade . The junkets are fewer and less populated . It’s a a great PR move for them.
Anyone wants to do a party bus to Pala with pick up on Francisquito leaving about 9:30 let me know !
@ Tank, Of the names you mentioned Redskins is really bad. It’s a flat out derogatory term. As for the others, I agree with you.
Consent? What’s the world coming to? Braves, Aztecs, Chiefs, Redskins, etc – who has incited this imaginary era of offended groups? Next we’re going to be penalized for being proud of our team and banned from certain colors. What a joke.
The tribe of this site’s readers has graciously consented to let me continue posting comments, even though the State of California may deem them offensive.
