(Pomona) – Logan Schmidt, a 6’4″, 210-pound left-hander out of Ganesha, has been drafted in the second round (number 59 pick overall) by the Cleveland Guardians in the MLB draft.

Schmidt has a fastball that is consistently in the 93-94 MPH range and has reached 98, a slider and a good breaking ball as well. Schmidt went 10-0 with an ERA of .087 last season as he helped lead Ganesha to the 2026 CIF Division 2 championship where they beat Loyola 6-3. He allowed just 15 hits all year. The Giants finished 26-3-1 on the season overall.

Schmidt, an LSU recruit, is one of the youngest players in the entire draft class at 17 years old. Schmidt was the 45th ranked prospect in the draft according to MLB pipeline.

Will his coach answer interview questions for him? Will he miss a minor league game for some kind of showcase but then play in it because the owner asked his private coach for him to play?

The selection of Jake Long at #379 was a pleasant development, but this guy Schmidt going at #59, with those numbers, is really cool. Pitchers with that size and mastery of the art are going to be in demand until they get rid of the sport, so it’s no mystery why he’s wanted at age 17. I wish him the best of luck in getting a good contract, and even more luck in handling his coming wad of money wisely.

With LSU offering big nil money and the Indians offering big bonus money, let the bidding war begin. This kid will be able to retire a millionaire after three seasons at LSU or MLB.
