Derrick "Bubba" Johnson and the Wildcats are looking forward to the playoffs
It’s all Monrovia obviously but the next three spots are still up for grabs. Temple City has surprised but La Canada and South Pas aren’t dead yet. San Marino and Blair? Well, they might be.
Monrovia (5-2, 2-0) – The Wildcats have hammered their last two opponents by the combined score of 113-0. Anymore questions? Bottom line: M-Town is loaded. Anything other than Monrovia as the Rio Hondo Champion is pure fantasy at this point. The Cats are trying to figure out who their first round playoff opponent is.
Body of Work: 24-26 overall record of opponents; 2-2 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: Temple City, at South Pasadena, La Canada, (10-11 record remaining opponents)
Projection: First
Temple City (3-4, 2-0) – Don’t look now but the Rams have won three of their last four including their first two in the Rio Hondo. Josh Simangunsong is running the ball as well as anybody in the valley and the defense is doing what it has to do. Who would have thunk it?
Body of Work: 24-25 overall record of opponents; 0-4 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: at Monrovia, Blair, at South Pasadena (11-10 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Second
La Canada (3-4, 1-1) – The Spartans had some injuries earlier in the season, including one to quarterback Scott Gray, but now they’re back at full strength. It didn’t help last week at Temple City as the Rams ran them over and sent them packing. La Canada needs to win three straight to have a shot at second. Right now that looks improbable especially with Monrovia still on the docket.
Body of Work: 26-24 overall record of opponents; 2-3 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: at Blair, San Marino, at Monrovia (9-12 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Third
South Pasadena (4-3, 1-1) – South Pasadena started fast but have now lost three of their last four including a 28-21 loss to La Canada in the Rio Hondo opener. The Tigers could beat San Marino and have an outside shot at Temple City but in between they get the big green Wildcat monster. Ouch!
Body of Work: 18-31 overall record of opponents; 0-2 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: at San Marino, Monrovia, Temple City (10-11 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Fourth
San Marino (2-5, 0-2) – The Titans won their first two games but since then the wheels have come off. They’ve lost five straight, (two in the Rio Hondo), and Head Coach Mike Mooney has stepped down for personal reasons. Three consecutive wins seems like a huge mountain to climb, and even if the Titans pulled it off a playoff spot isn’t guaranteed. Looking forward to 2011 seems like the only alternative.
Body of Work: 22-27 overall record of opponents; 0-3 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: South Pasadena, at La Canada, at Blair; (9-12 record remaining opponents)
Projection: Fifth
Blair (2-5, 0-2) – After winning their first two games, the Vikings have lost five straight. And it’s been ugly. During that five game span, they have been outscored 249-20. In a 57-0 loss to Monrovia, they allowed five touchdowns on the first five plays. As far as the rest of the season goes the Vikes need to avoid anymore injuries, keep the ball on the ground to keep the clock moving, and make plans for the Holidays.
Body of Work: 24-24 overall record of opponents; 0-4 against teams with winning records.
Games Remaining: La Canada, at Temple City, San Marino (8-13 record of remaining opponents)
Projection: Sixth
Notes: Due to construction on the new track at Monrovia High School, the Temple City game will be played at Maranatha High. The last home game of the season vs. La Canada will be played at South Pasadena.
