A Closer Look at the Almont

Aaron Cantu and Schurr are happy with 2-0 start in Almont

Schurr is beginning to assert itself as the top dog in the Almont. Last week the Spartans showed Alhambra who’s the boss. After that it’s anybody’s ballgame. Four teams are sitting at 1-1 with everybody beating up everybody else.

Montebello beat San Gabriel by one but lost to Bell Gardens by two. BG lost to Schurr by a touchdown before edging the Oilers. SG, which routed Keppel before falling to Montebello, has a huge game this week against the Lancers.

Schurr (4-3, 2-0) – The Spartans tough non league schedule looks like it’s starting to pay dividends. Aaron Cantu, Chris Chiaromonte, Abraham Gonzalez and company are warming up at just the right time. They still have a couple of hurdles to clear but they should have enough to make the jump.

Body of Work: 28-22 overall record of opponents; 2-3 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Keppel, Montebello, San Gabriel (5-16 record remaining opponents)

Projection: First

San Gabriel (3-4, 1-1) – The Matadors stumbled against Montebello in the Almont opener but had a big win over Rosemead and almost knocked off Burbank earlier this year. The Matadors seemed to have settled on Andy Guerrero as their starting quarterback. Arthur Brown has been solid on both sides.

Body of Work: 22-27 overall record of opponents; 2-2 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Bell Gardens, at Alhambra, at Schurr (12-9 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Second

Bell Gardens (4-3, 1-1) – The Lancers have been up and down so far in 2010. They started off the season on the wrong end of a 48-0 loss to Azusa but came right back with a strong 10 point victory over El Rancho. Biggest game of the season so far is this week at San Gabriel. A win means a possible road to second place but a loss puts their backs against the wall. In the loss to Schurr BG gave the Spartans all they wanted.

Body of Work: 27-22 overall record of opponents; 1-3 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: at San Gabriel, at Keppel, Alhambra (7-14 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Third

Alhambra (4-3, 1-1) – The Moors lost their first two before winning four straight. Last week they were humbled by Schurr. Sophomore Josh Mendoza has done a good job at quarterback for his first year behind center. The Moors game this week against Montebello can make a break their season.

Body of Work: 20-29 overall record of opponents; 1-2 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: Montebello, San Gabriel, at Bell Gardens (9-12 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Fourth

Montebello (2-5, 1-1) – The Oilers must feel snake bit. Four of their five losses have been by five points or less. They lost to Arroyo (currently ranked number five in the Mid-Valley Division) by just four points in week two. Fernando Hoffens is a dual threat at quarterback and the defense holds its own. Their next two games are key.

Body of Work: 28-22 overall record of opponents; 0-5 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: at Alhambra, at Schurr, at Keppel (8-14 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Fifth

Keppel (0-7, 0-2) – It’s been a disaster for Keppel since the opening bell.  The Aztecs have been shut out in six of their seven games while allowing over 40 points five times and over 30 in the other two. The season can’t end fast enough.

Body of Work: 23-26 overall record of opponents; 0-3 against teams with winning records.

Games Remaining: at Schurr, Bell Gardens, Montebello (10-11 record remaining opponents)

Projection: Sixth
