Schurr pitched three shutouts overall – all in league- and allowed just 21 points in five Almont League games. The Spartans held Viewpoint to just seven points in the first round of the playoffs and gave Arroyo all it could handle in the second round before falling 28-14. 28 was the third lowest point total for the Knights all year. They racked up 56 the week before.

The Spartans allowed 205 points in a dozen games which averages out to just over 17 per game. Considering Schurr played early season games against Buena Park, Diamond Ranch and Southeast Division Champion La Serna, those numbers rank among the best in the Mid-Valley.

“Our defense statistically was the best in the league and probably the Top 5 in the Division,” said Schurr HC Marco Ramirez. “But we always feel as though our defense gets over looked at times. Like we fly under the radar. But it keeps us excited to keep playing good defense.

And that defense was good all year under the direction of Peter Soto. Soto has been coaching with Ramirez and on the Schurr staff for the last six years. This season he guided a defense that was clearly the backbone of a team that was maybe a play away from the semi finals.

Schurr has traditionally been known for a hard hitting tough minded stop unit and it was no different in 2013. The Spartans’ defense biggest problem in 2014 might be that they are no longer under the radar. For that we recognize Peter Soto as our Mid-Valley Division DC of the year.
