High powered offenses always hit a wall when going up against Muir’s defense. Burroughs was limited to seven points, Burbank was held to 17 and Crescenta Valley, which had racked up 131 points the previous three weeks, fell to the Mustangs and DC/HC John Hardy 39-26.
After knocking out La Mirada in a shootout in the first round of the playoffs, Muir faced a Los Altos team that was coming off games in which they racked up 44, 24 and 40 points against solid teams Bonita, West Covina and playoff opponent Paramount. The Conquerors had been running the ball at will but Muir held them to their lowest rushing total of the year – 130 yards. Los Altos had gashed Paramount for nearly twice that amount the week before. Muir also held Los Altos to 31 yards passing in a 27-2 win.
Hardy oversaw a quick secondary that forced opposing quarterbacks into seven interceptions overall. The Mustangs defense allowed 215 points in 13 games – just over 16 per contest. In Pacific League play, Muir allowed 81 points in eight games.
For advancing to the semi finals and presiding over a defense that routinely threw a blanket over opposing offenses, Muir HC John Hardy is our Southeast DC of the year.
