The high school football season is finally here, and after the completion of Week Zero last week, there is still a lot to unfold and watch as the 2021 season progresses. Keep in mind that some of these schools completed somewhat of a season back in April, so for those teams who did, they will want to add to their success or fix their mistakes.
Last week I witnessed Nate Bennett make his first career start for Village Christian, who put on a show against La Salle. As weird as it might be, no one across the area said anything positive about the Crusaders. Some were counting them out altogether.
West Covina, looking to build on their success earlier this year, looked good against Monrovia last Friday until they blew a 19-6 halftime lead. However, from what I watched back in April, I’m not too worried about the Bulldogs.
Look at last season, for example; some teams played only one game so that seniors can have something before they graduate. When thinking about it, that is better than some leagues who altogether canceled the entire season. Sorry for those seniors.
But, again, that was then, and this is now. Everyone, including players, coaching staff, and media members, are excited for an entire 10-game regular season with the playoffs soon to follow.
Let the madness of high school football ensue.

Lastly, today is Kobe Bryant’s 43rd birthday, and from the minute I woke up, I threw on his jersey and proceeded with my day. I will be doing the same tomorrow as well since it is 8-24. It has been over a year since he, his daughter, and the seven others died in a helicopter crash on that foggy January 26th morning. Whenever I see a highlight of Kobe or Gigi, I always think back to that day, a day that will forever be engraved into my head.
It feels like yesterday when I was sent a link to TMZ reporting that Kobe had died. I was glued to my phone, and the entire time as I mindlessly scrolled through my phone, I kept telling myself that this was a joke or he had survived because it was Kobe Bryant and nothing could stop the Black Mamba.
Ultimately, that wasn’t the case, and when it was confirmed that he did indeed pass, it felt like nothing else mattered. For everyone who would yell, “Kobe,” as they threw trash away their childhood hero had died.
What made things even worse was that his daughter and others were on board also had their lives cut short. It is sad to see, but we all know that if Kobe were here, he would tell us to continue to move forward and not look back at the past.
Easier said than done, Kobe.
The world has changed into something different since you left, Mamba. Even with that said, your spirit and legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace, and happy birthday. You are truly missed.
That’s where I’m going.
