Game Night: Week One

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday August 26

Warren (1-0) at La Serna (0-1) (at California)

Good matchup on a Thursday night. La Serna lost a tough one in overtime to Bonita while Warren wiped out Wilson (Long Beach). The Lancers have a tough non -league schedule. Warren gets the W.

Warren 31 La Serna 21

Friday August 27

Monrovia (1-0) at Arcadia (1-0)

Arcadia raised a few eyebrows with a nice win over Marina. Monrovia had to rally but ultimately did what it needed to do against West Covina. Wildcats should have enough.

Monrovia 27 Arcadia 20

Northview (1-0) at Charter Oak (1-0)

Charter Oak looks to be back after a big win over St. Joseph. The Chargers could be poised for a big year. Northview rolled but the Vikings weren’t tested against La Puente . They will be this week. Charter Oak wins at home.

Charter Oak 28 Northview 14

Bonita (1-0) at Downey (0-1)

Downey came up short but Corona Del Mar tends to make a lot of teams come up short. Bonita is coming off a nice win over the aforementioned La Serna. Bonita will be in it until the end but Downey wins a close one.

Downey 31 Bonita 28

Glendora (1-0) at Covina (0-0) (Covina District Field)

It’s the opener for Covina and the Colts should come out fired up. Glendora is coming off a win over West Ranch. Good early test for Covina however the Tartans have to much. Glendora goes 2-0.

Glendora 35 Covina 13

San Dimas (1-0) at Montebello (0-1)

Some people doubted Whittier last week. I’m not really sure why. The Saints marched all over Whittier while the Oilers had a tough pull with a talented Garfield team. They’ll have their hands full this week as well. San Dimas gets it done.

San Dimas 35 Montebello 20

Ganesha (0-0) at Arroyo (0-0)

Arroyo was supposed to host Sierra Vista but the Dons had to cancel. Azusa also canceled its game with Ganesha. So the two schools worked it out and now we have Ganesha at Arroyo. Arroyo hasn’t played in two years and is chomping at the bit. Ganesha is no pushover but it should be a successful debut for Knight head coach Chuck Leonardis.

Arroyo 38 Ganesha 21

Bell Gardens (0-1) at El Rancho (1-0)

El Rancho routed Don Lugo last week in a game people thought would be much closer. Good win for the Dons. Bell Gardens took a beating by Troy. El Rancho gets the victory.

El Rancho 34 Bell Gardens 10

News and Notes:

The Schurr-South Torrance game Friday night was moved to South Torrance. The Baldwin Park-South El Monte game was canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test from South El Monte. The game will be made up in September.

It really is a shame, sadly when the pros especially in basketball started forming super teams it became more and more common at every level of sports. Kevin Durant losing to the warriors then signing with them was probably what broke the camels back, people have no shame hoarding talent even if they are playing in running clock games weekly, coaching no longer means “coaching” now it’s all about how well can you attract studs to your program. On our end we have maybe 80-90 kids including freshmen, our sophomore class maybe had a handful of kids, personally i was worried, then I see Bell Gardens today with 25 kids during our Frosh/Soph team, I felt dissapointed to see how once proud programs are decimated. kids much rather put on that St John Bosco uniform even if it means riding the pine for 14 games over being stars in their local cities

@ Pac5 Scout & NWO: We’re getting dangerously close to one-platoon football, something we haven’t seen in around three-quarters of a century. Covid-19 has accelerated this trend, at least for the time being, but the numbers of athletes going out for high school football teams have generally been declining for years.

Pac 5) Have you seen what “All Star” football teams are doing to youth football? Just like travel baseball, it is ruining the experience of playing with your friends. Coaches poach the best players from Jr. All American, Pop Warner, AAU and elsewhere. It really waters down the competition of the leagues and drops the numbers of individual teams. Anyone can coach a team full of kids with prior experience, no reward in that.

I counted 23 kids in pads for Mt. View when they faced SG last Friday. They were playing both ways, and very quickly they were down 21 after early injuries.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but…….Have noticed many once proud programs are playing with barely enough players on their rosters like San Dimas, Pasadena, Dorsey and Crenshaw. Just a few years ago Crenshaw was a power where D1 college scouts flocked to for players and today can’t field a team. D1 type players are all transfering to a handful of super teams and I predict these super teams will have to travel to Texas And Florida to get teams to play them. I’am hearing rumblings that Muir may be in trouble and has cancelled this weeks game against Hart and the cause is not Covid. Perhaps to keep football healthy is to combine two schools and form one team ala Remember the Titans. I would not let my kid play against St. John Bosco. What would be the point? That he can take a beating. BTW you can’t go by the rosters posted on Max Preps, they are far from accurate. Just count players in uniform at the game you attend.
