Hartnett Resigns at Gabrielino

By Tim Peterson

(San Gabriel)- Joe Hartnett, who was just named the new head football coach at Gabrielino in April, has resigned from the position to take a coaching job at Pasadena City College he confirmed on Twitter.

Gabrielino will begin the search for a new head coach immediately. The new head coach will need to put his staff together quickly as the 2023 season kicks off in mid-August.

The Eagles went 3-5 last year (2-3 in the Mission Valley League) under Lorenzo Mena who resigned after the season.

There is only 1 man that can save the Gabrielino Eagles. His name is Ben Macias. Those who have been there know his record as a coach the lower levels. With His resume as a former player. It is time to bring him on as HC. If GHS is serious about turning this place around and making it competitive, they will find Ben and hand him the keys to the smallest kingdom in San Gabriel. He has the reputation within the community to provide the resurgence. You heard it here first! Make GHS Competitive Again #BenMacias2024

@ Question Mark: I’ve never been directly involved with athletic fundraising at Alhambra High or anywhere else, but I’ll tell you what I know. In addition, I’ll be speaking from the context of what’s been going on at AHS since the imposition of a Title IX settlement back in around 2007.
My understanding is that the football booster club at Alhambra can provide money for equipment, supplies, pre-game meals, and so forth. I don’t believe the Booster Club is allowed to supplement the coaches’ pay, but anyone who has information to the contrary is welcome to correct me.
Any money that is donated directly to the AHS football program or to the Athletic Department must be divided among all the teams at the school. I think that policy applies to all three high schools in the Alhambra Unified School District.
I don’t know how much the legal requirements and rules might vary among public school districts, as well as private schools, when it comes to athletic fundraising and spending. Perhaps others who have more insight can join the discussion.

@Ron: Is there any limit that a booster or alumni club can give to a head coach and/or coaches to boost the stipends? It does seem unrealistic that given the inflation that any man would coach football that is now a year round job for 2500$. That pittance would be spent in a month buying gatorade for his players. Considering the countless hours involved that sounds like a labor violation wide open to a back pay lawsuit

@ Anonymous: I’ll attempt to answer your question.
High school head coaches who work on campus full-time are generally teachers, and yes, they have to be credentialed. They’re generally expected to teach four classes besides coaching athletes in a particular sport; they do get a conference period for planning lessons, grading papers, and meeting with administrators and parents.
The head coaching stipend of $2,500-$3,500 is considered inadequate by most, but I don’t know of any coaches who have turned it down. Of course, that amount is in addition to the regular salary for coaches who are also teachers.
On occasion, a high school head coach can be a classified employee, such as a campus supervisor. Although many of them are full-time school employees, they make significantly less money than teachers, so they’re at an economic disadvantage unless they have a side job and/or get a lot of overtime.

Anonymous, that is loser talk and that losing mentality is exactly what has been hurting Gabrielino since it’s the early 2000’s. Gabrielino needs an alumni who is invested in the program and who knows what it takes to be successful.

    look guys
is it bad of the coach to ditch the kids like this – YES
can you blame the guy? – NO
Gabrielino and many of our local schools do not RESPECT athletics . They ask way to much from the coach for such little return. I understand they don’t do it for the money and do it for the love and opportunity to mentor young men. Let me remind you , this is not YOUTH FOOTBALL. HS football demands so much more, and if he has the opportunity to go JC and possibly open more doors to continue coaching and mentor young men… more power to him.

LETS FIX THE PROBLEM AT HOME FIRST.
you can start by giving these coaches JOBS and not stipends, do coaches need teaching credentials?

You don’t need someone good. You just need someone who cares. It’s Gabrielino. Not Bishop Amat. Winning league titles is out of the question. You just need someone that wants to be there. There’s tons of kids out there that need a teaching job. Give someone a shot. The entire school will benefit from it.

The situation there might require more experience . It is a difficult situation and even Lombardi /Shula / Walsh/McVey would be challenged

Create a teaching job along with the head football job and hire a young kid with potential. Problem solved.

I think Tommy Leach would make a great head coach, he who previously coached at Diamond Ranch, Chaparral, Etiwanda, and Eastvale Eleanor Roosevelt. He would be a great addition to build Gabrielino Football. Likewise with Coach Zaire Calvin.

Sad situation going on at GHS. Feel terrible for the kids. Far from what the program used to be in the early 2000’s. As a current educator at a prominent local high school in the OC, what the Tongva nation needs is a coach/staff that works on campus in order to recruit kids and create a culture. Admin support is crucial in order to hire the right coach.
