(Alhambra) – Bell Gardens quarterback Jacob Reyes threw three touchdown passes, and Sean Allen and Daniel Tovar each scored twice to lead the visiting Lancers to a 25-14 victory over the Alhambra Moors last Thursday night.
The Lancers improved their overall record to 3-3 by winning the teams’ Almont League opener, and the Moors fell to 0-6 on the season.
Reyes connected on eight of 12 passes for 178 yards; Allen caught four of those throws for a total of 143 yards. Allen’s 21-yard touchdown grab on the last play of the first half enabled Bell Gardens to tie the score at 7-7, and his 25-yard scoring reception clinched the game for the Lancers with 11 seconds left.
Tovar, a sophomore, carried the ball 17 times for 158 yards. He scored on a 67-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter and later caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Reyes to give the Lancers a 19-7 lead.
The Moors narrowed the gap to 19-14 in the final quarter, driving 70 yards and scoring on a two-yard run by Julian Venegas Khavari with 5:27 to go. However, the Lancers came up with the ensuing onside kick by Alhambra and drove 59 yards to put the game out of reach.
Venegas Khavari, a senior running back, scored both of the Moors’ touchdowns, even though he gained only 28 yards in 17 carries. Alhambra rushed for just 70 yards in all. Sophomore quarterback Bryan Leonard completed 11 of 31 passes for 171 yards, with no interceptions.
Bell Gardens will travel to Schurr High this Friday night for a first-place showdown with the Spartans, who were 55-18 victors over San Gabriel in their league opener. Alhambra will play its homecoming game against Mark Keppel at the same time in a battle of winless teams.
