Eagles Have Peaceful, Easy Feeling in Rosemead, 38-0

By Rich Whittington

(Rosemead) – The South El Monte Eagles had an easy time Thursday evening, defeating the host Rosemead Panthers, 38-0, at Rosemead’s Panther Stadium.

South El Monte opened the scoring for the evening when running back Angel Valladares scored on a 3-yard TD blast. Valladares then converted the PAT attempt, making the score 7-0, with 3:19 remaining in the opening period.

The Eagles added their second score of the contest a couple of minutes later when RB Juan Saldana scored on a 1-yard rush. A second Valladares PAT was added, making the score 14-0 at the close of the first quarter.

SEM continued its scoring display in the second quarter. After scoring twice on the ground, the Eagles took to the air, as quarterback Matthew Medina connected with his favorite target, receiver Tony Aguilar, for a 69-yard “catch-and-run”. A third Valladares PAT made the score 21-0 at the mid-point of the game’s opening half.

Valladares also successfully converted a 28-yard field goal attempt in the period, making the score 24-0 at halftime.

The third quarter provided more offensive fireworks from South El Monte. Medina completed his second TD connection of the evening, this time to wideout Fabian Fernandez, for a 34-yard score. Valladares added PAT #4, making the score 31-0 with 6:50 remaining in the quarter.

The Eagles scored again, as Medina connected with Aguilar for their second score of the evening, a 21-yard touchdown. Valladares added his 5th PAT, making the score 38-0 after three-quarters of play.

This proved to be the final score. Rosemead never found a rhythm in the contest. Injuries, penalties, and turnovers kept the Panthers playing from behind for the entire evening.

South El Monte’s next game is on Friday, 10/13 when the Eagles return to the friendly confines of the “Swamp” to host the Gabrielino Eagles. Rosemead’s next challenge, also on 10/13, is a home affair against the El Monte Lions. Kickoff for both contests is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

I knew Garay of course threw over 1k of course I was referring to J Michel as the last Qb to throw over 1k for the Eagles. I probably should’ve worded it as Gallardo’s first Qb to throw for 1k. I knew when Tovar was there they didn’t throw the ball much I also wasn’t aware M Zamudio threw for 1k so I stand corrected.

The title to this article is AWESOME! Props! As far as 1000 yard passers, Jose Garay passed for 2,000 yards in back to back to back seasons from 2006-2008. This south team passes the eye test. Receivers are tall and lanky, they got freshman on their Lines doing work. Looking tough.

Tough forfeit loss for rosemead against Mt. View due to transfers, Mt. View can now maybe squeeze into the playoffs as at large team. Speaking of transfers SEM got a good one from Garfield High school, last years All City LB JuJu Zamudio. Kid is a stud on defense!

Had Zamunio and Medina throw for 1200+ and before that they had that RB Tovar he ran for 2k and their QB got around 700-900 didn’t really need to pass. Just the most recent.

Simply Dominating victory! SEM has not had a 1,000 passer since the Aguilar days. Eagles a nice balance of running and passing plus defense is solid. They’ll steam roll Gab then the showdown with Arroyo.
