Game Night: Week 8

David Titone-Perez and Los Altos have a big Valle Vista League game Friday night against Diamond Ranch. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Friday October 13

Warren (5-2) vs. Downey (6-1) (SoFi Stadium)

Warren has won three straight including a 50-14 win over Norwalk last week. Downey hasn’t lost since Zero Week. Since then the Vikings have ripped off six straight wins. This is one of the best rivalries in Southern California and now the players have the chance to perform on the grandest stage that is SoFi Stadium. They should put on a show. It will be back and forth with both teams trading punches. Downey will be the last team standing.

Downey 31 Warren 28

Bonita (6-1) at Ayala (3-4)

Big game for both teams as they open Mountain West League play. Ayala fell short last week in a tough game against San Clemente while Bonita was rolling over Sierra Vista. Ayala has played a tough schedule which will have the Bulldogs ready for league. Bonita has just one loss but that was courtesy of a solid Northview team. Ayala’s defense will do its part to keep Bonita in check. The offense does the rest. Ayala wins.

Ayala 27 Bonita 21

Thursday October 12

Burroughs (6-1) at Arcadia (5-2)

After last week’s win over Muir Burroughs looks like the best team in the Pacific League. The Bears are having an outstanding season so winning six of seven games. Arcadia has won big in its last two games but Burroughs will be maybe the best team the Apaches have played all year. With the win over the Mustangs last week Burroughs has its eye on a Paciifc League title. The Bears keep marching towards that goal.

Burroughs 31 Arcadia 21

Friday October 13

Monrovia (3-3) at La Canada (3-4)

Both teams are trying to bounce back from tough losses. La Canada let a 17-0 lead get away in a loss to San Marino while Monrovia was humbled by South Pas 56-28. It’s also a game that both teams need to stay in the hunt in the Rio Hondo. Expect a shootout. Monrovia has had trouble making stops at times allowing over 50 points in each one of its three losses. La Canada will give Monrovia all it can handle. Last week Monrovia’s defense bended and ultimately did break. Against the Spartans the Wildcats will eventually make the stops needed. M-Town survives.

Monrovia 42 La Canada 35

Chino (6-1) at Covina (6-1) (Covina District Field)

Good game to open Sierra League play. Covina and Chino are the two best teams in the Sierra so this one could be for the League title. Covina has answered the call every week this year. The Colts only loss was to Northview and that was by only two points. Chino, 6-1 as well, has only lost to Diamond Bar. Covina jumps out early and never relinquishes the lead. Chino rallies but falls just short.

Covina 38 Chino 35

Northview (6-1) at San Dimas (4-3)

Northview looks like a team that is ready to make a serious run. The Vikings have been up to every challenge so far and now get their first Valle Vista League game. Their only loss was in Las Vegas to a good Sierra Vista team. San Dimas and Monrovia have two common opponents – Bonita and Monrovia. The Saints lost to both of those teams while Northview beat them both. This year the Vikes just have too much. Northview rolls.

Northview 34 San Dimas 14

Diamond Ranch (6-1) at Los Altos (5-2)

Another big Valle Vista League game. Diamond Ranch just suffered its first loss last week to Colony while Los Altos has just two losses all year. Last week the Conquerors shut out Nogales 48-0. With the Valle Vista consisting of only four teams, and four quality teams at that, every league game is crucial. The Panthers are looking to get back on track after last week’s loss. It’s really a toss-up. Both teams are evenly matched. Diamond Ranch wins…close.

Diamond Ranch 27 Los Altos 24

Charter Oak (1-6) at Alta Loma (1-6)

It’s hard to imagine a game where both teams are 1-6 being important but here we are. Because even though both teams have only won one game all season neither one has played a league game. If Charter Oak or Alta Loma can win a couple of games in the Mountain West starting with this one they could sneak in the playoffs. Whoever loses this one can pretty much write off the season. Alta Loma hasn’t been competitive in any of its six losses. The Braves lost 40-3 to West Covina, 41-7 to Colony and 47-0 to Hesperia. Charter Oak has had some tough moments as well but two of their losses were by a total of five points. This is a game the Chargers should get. It will be close but Charter Oak comes out on top.

Charter Oak 24 Alta Loma 14

Anonymous. I could be half correct stating ;’:”if a necessary subject within the curriculum is open and must be filled, and the out of district coach , with much better successful experience than all within district applicants, has a credential in one of the ‘open subjects for hire, the out of district more qualified coach will get the job! Although there are many administrators with philosophy ‘ it is his turn now after assisting several years ‘ ; they will hire within

    Something to think about,

Not true, a district is NOT required to hire a coach from within. It may be preferred to do so since they would be available on campus, it is not a requirement.

‘Football Legend’ only in your ‘self appointed genius’ know it all! Have you ever taught in a public high school? I suggest NO~ ‘Ha Ha Superintendent fire head coach?” ? What if the district superintendent and assistants have never been concerned with their high school football program. (Lot of good years in past , but I am not educated if / nor when the coach and staff left) . I suggest there are about ‘equal’ principals who care and do not give one centimeter of feces’ about their schools athletics. Many are focused on state test scores.

Monrovia got out coached in the south Pasadena game period. The defense coordinator didn’t make any adjustments. The offense coordinator is so predictable are we playing youth football. The coaching staff is end over there heads not city football……you can’t bring your friends to coach (chow) did the same he realized it was a mistake. I have some good 8th graders want send them to Monrovia with that coaching staff

Note re coach hiring process, If a school district employee wants to coach a team, and expresses that interest, the school district is required to hire him or her as a coach. Non employee outside contractor coaches, are second choice.

I have seen that exact scenario play out, and in most cases there are a lot of meetings to discourage the school district employee from continuing his her interest in a position that would “normally” go to a more qualified outside contractor coach.

So how might that play out, say Monrovia want to fire their coach, and some PE teacher or Math teacher may want to throw their hat in the ring. The principal and or other school administrators who have hire and fire powers, (not the school board) will be constrained in that process and may be required to hire that PE or Math teacher. And given that it is mid season that might just be the way it happens. Short of luring some old coach out of retirement, with some serious booster money.

This isn’t the first time the Monrovia principal ruined a football program with strong history. It took El Rancho a LONG time to bounce from his negative influence and it still hasn’t fully recovered. The guy is ego driven without intelligence and that’s a bad combination.

I agree, so many has-beens have these intense opinions about coaching, but won’t get out there and do the jobs they think they know how to do.

Whoever said the principal needs to be fired doesn’t have a clue how school districts work. A principal isn’t there to make sure the football program is run well. They have a bit more on their plate than to just be concerned with how the program is being run.

Guess what has-beens, sometimes a team is going to lose. Even a team that has ruled their league for a while. No one called for firings at Monrovia when San Marino ran over everyone in league and went to state. You can’t be great forever.

DEI for the Wildcats coaching staff?

Reality you are a good coach or not a good coach, especially at high school most of the effort is to teach fundamentals. Esp, as most schools are dropping all but varsity football and maybe a freshman team.. The numbers are that small, now.

It is stated you need a coach that can communicate with the community, whatever that means.

IF you are white and you cannot relate to or play a black coach, well that is on the player, if you are black and cannot relate to or play for a white coach that is on you as a player too. And do we need to drag Asians and or American Indians into the mix.

This is just a convenient gripe.. If your coaches cannot do the job, fire them and get a new coach in the off season. As you are not going to get a replacement in a couple of weeks and implimenting a new system would be a disaster now.

I attribute the comments to a convenient way to criticize the coaches with something they cannot defend or comment upon, as a way to vent over losing to So Pasadena. Face it Monrovia football has been a dynasty, losing league would not be the disaster or end of he world. And if it is a trend, who knows, maybe it is the start of a decline. If you went back in time to the early 1970s and the record consecutive win streak TC enjoyed and told them that they would be losing almost every game by huge deficits as we saw over the recent history, they would have sad you were insane.. I could not happen.

Well I am here to tell you that Monrovia football dynasty will end at some point, Monrovia will not win the league and go to the playoffs every year.. It is impossible even if the decline is small, it will happen. Even with attempts by boosters to find the next Kurt Scooby on a home school enhancement program…

But to blame diversity is bogus.

    Old School,

I agree getting rid of Chris Williams was a mistake, unless there are things we’re not aware of that he did. The team seemed to be going in the right direction.
The Randy Bell situation was a cluster F as well. You reference the lack of “diversity on coaching staff” in your post though. How does that factor in?

Yes monrovia needs to make a coaching change now. The principal wanted chris Williams gone first this. School board please fire the principal now. City coaches don’t work it’s a different kid. Need a coach who can relate to the community. I watched practice offense is so predictable #1 lines up on the right side no motion he’s the best receiver in the valley . Move him around get him the ball in different ways. Oh that comes with a offense coordinator with a plan. Coaching staff is terrible..monrovia community take notice.
