(La Puente) – La Puente took a back and forth game with Bassett 14-10 Thursday night at La Puente High School.
Both teams started off with punts on their first possession.
Bassett turned the ball over on downs on its 20-yard line and on the next play La Puente’s Ezekiel Zamora found wide open sophomore Aaron Silva for an 80-yard catch and run to paydirt making it 7-0 with one minute left in the first quarter.
On the next two possessions both teams exchanged punts and fumbles.
A blocked Warriors punt gave the Olympians a short field and they capitalized with a 12-yard run from Diego Espinoza to tie up the game.
Bassett had another blocked punt that set up a 20-yard field goal by Matthew Carrera that gave them a 10-7 lead going into halftime. Angel Valdivia recovered both blocked punts.
The Warriors took the lead back on their first drive of the second half when Dalonta Foley took a jet sweep into the end zone for a 14-10 lead.
The Olympians turned the ball over on downs and quarterback Johnny Guerrero threw a pair of picks to end the game. Aldo Silva intercepted the first one and Jose Aguirre picked off the second to clinch the game with 44-seconds left.
La Puente is now 7-1 and starts off league with a win, while Bassett fell to 5-3 and 0-1 in league.
The Warriors travel to Ganesha next week while Olympians will face off against Garey at home.
Your sizing them up against the worst league on Southern California that has schools with 300-400 students . Workman ? Every game running clock lol I’m not judging and respect kids efforts but trying to put things in perspective in regards to coaching accomplishments. #rootingforquality
You do know that Duarte and workman are in the league starting next season. The last 5 games they played are basically league. Webb a
One loss. Temecula prep was a league champion last year going 6-0. But we must be aware of the kids in program now. They only have 40 kids. The kids on campus are not like they used to be. I hear LP had 3 teams ten years ago. We must always look into things before we judge.
I’m
Not sure what your take on the guy is ?
LP used to play in legit league ; this schedule is ridiculous. Bassett best win , Webb only other team with pulse on schedule. Ganesha and Garey have played some ok teams and should roll them .
I don’t think they are better , just scheduling smoke and mirrors
The HATE is real. You should meet the guy. I was fortunate to meet him at a 7v7 and he told me why he left Tc. And to be honest him and the staff are doing a good job. Lp hasn’t been to playoffs, or had winning season in years.
It was a hard fought game by both teams, you could tell it was a rival game these boys were hitting and it was chippy all game long!! Unfortunately Bassett feel short!! LP got the deserved victory!!
I was kinda bummed by this result , hoping Bassett Dad could bring home victory . It’s easy to root against LP these days ; coach who abandoned TC after 0-10 season for greener (easier ) pastures at LP; then turned LP into D14 bottom feeder to gain glossy but meaningless record …ugh. Here’s hoping they get rolled by Ganesha and Garey and AQs fill the D14 ranks
