Knights Leave Vikings Feeling Dazed and Confused, 63-14

By Rich Whittington

(Rosemead) – The Arroyo Knights wasted little time securing a victory Thursday evening, defeating the visiting Mt. View Vikings, 63-14, in front of a very vocal Homecoming crowd at Rosemead High School’s Panther Field.

As both participating schools are undergoing field renovations, it was necessary for the game to be held at a neutral site. Based on Arroyo’s performance, the location did not make a bit of difference. Arroyo started the game off with a bit of trickery, attempting an on-side kick on the game’s opening kickoff. The gamble was successful, as the Knights Daniel Aviles successfully recovered the attempt. Arroyo capitalized on the opportunity, scoring a few seconds later, as Running Back Adam Huizar found paydirt on a 23-yard run. The PAT was added by Kicker Jorge Lopez, making the score 7-0 with 10:45 remaining in the opening quarter.

This was only the beginning of Arroyo’s scoring in the quarter. The Knights added a second running score when RB Lelan Garcia found the endzone on a 5-yard blast. A second successful Lopez PAT made the score 14-0 with 8:23 remaining in quarter number one.

The Knights also added three passing scores before the first quarter ended. The first came on a “double pass” that saw Quarterback Dillon Seguin throw to Running Back Joe Reyes, who then connected with Javier Ramos for a 43-yard catch-and-run. The second came on a more traditional Seguin to Receiver Kurt Dominguez 38-yard connection. The third was a second Seguin to Dominguez 14-yard scoring strike. Three more Lopez PATs made the score 35-0 after one quarter.

The second quarter showed that Arroyo could also score on defense and special teams. Dominguez got the ball rolling, scoring on a 48-yard fumble recovery. Not to be outdone, teammate Romeo Arevalo got into the scoring game by returning a Mt. View punt sixty-five yards for a touchdown. The offense also scored in the second, as Wide Receiver Sebastian Serrano scored on a 39-yard “end-around”. Three more Lopez PATs made the score 56-0 as the first half came to a close.

There was no scoring in the game’s third quarter. Turnovers, and a running clock, ensured that each team only possessed the ball once in the period.

Mt. View opened the scoring in the game’s final quarter, as Running Back Everardo Nunez scored on a 19-yard run. The PAT was added by Herson Gasca, making the score 56-7 with 10:29 remaining in regulation. Arroyo countered as Arevalo scored on a 4-yard TD run. Lopez added his 9th PAT of the evening making the score 63-7 with 5:33 remaining on the clock.

Mt. View added their second score of the night when Victor Roman scored on a 25-yard scamper. Another Gasca PAT made the score 63-14 as the game ended.

Arroyo’s next game is on Friday, 10/20 when the Knights travel to the “Swamp” to battle the south El Monte Eagles, in what should determine the Mission Valley Championship. Mt. View’s next challenge, on Thursday, 10/19, is a road-trip to El Monte, where the Vikings will play the Lions. Kickoff for both contests is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Great take. MV football is a head scratcher. They’ve had great baseball teams, soccer teams and even basketball teams. Football just can’t seem to turn the page. Arroyo will just always be the top dog. Even with the MVL being the worst they’ve ever been they will continue to get the best.

I heard the old staff is back at Arroyo? Is that true?

@Anonymous, I understand the reason behind the Arroyo and Mtn. View dilemma. I was asking why?, Due to that Mtn. View has never won a league title since the school was established in ’71. The Moment SEM was opened it won and competed for a League title on the 1st year of Varsity eligibility, Fall of ’94 with Coach Thompson who left Mtn. View for South 2 years earlier. There has to be more to this issue than just talent and coaching. Does anyone care enough to bring about change at that school? Is this something the school district or admin is able to help with or monitor, when a school that is struggling has been let to fail in this area of sports. So much for parody in High School football sports. Makes you ask a question like? “Was this school the designated punching bag of the MVL”. I don’t agree with your theory about Singiser and Mckinnon, Arroyo was not relevant until MacKinnon took over the program in the 80’s. Arroyo was not close to what it is now. Its easier to make a winner when the talent pull is the highest in the area, building a program from the bottom up takes a lot patience and hard work. It’s not impossible but very difficult to accomplish. I’ve attended plenty of Mtn. View games in past years and I’ve also noticed that they’re always the victim of very questionable flag penalties by refs. Some calls that make you scratch your head, so there’s more to this story, trust. I’m just daring to ask the question that many don’t seem to care to be asking. Nevertheless Arroyo looks like the favorite to become MVL Champions this year. I have HC Gallardo and DC Coach Beltran at SEM coming up with a scheme to bring Arroyo down, but since Chuck is back its anyone’s game now.

It’s actually very simple. Arroyo has better athletes. Because they have better athletes they attract better coaches. That’s why McKinnon and Singiser stayed so long. They had talent coming in year in and year out.
Here’s a fun question….how would McKinnon’s and Singiser’s coaching careers been had he coached at Mt View instead of Arroyo? Would they have won a league title? A CIF title? Would they have lasted over 20 years? Would they have built a playoff team every year? They’re both great coaches. No doubt. They also had talent every year.

Arroyo is who we thought they were!! So the scoop is Chuck is back not Singiser. Regardless Arroyo is always going to be the standard in the MVL. Mtn. View is decades behind Arroyo when it comes to football strategy and talent level. The question is why? Last time Mtn. View beat Arroyo Max Shubin was Mtn. Views QB, Rich Rodriguez was the TE and Jimmy Carter was in the White House. That’s a bit of history trivia Tim Peterson would appreciate. The great Joe Torosian knows who these players were. In those days Schurr HS was part of the MVL and they were considered the top team in the league. Mtn. View’s offense is predictable and one dimensional, run heavy but what do you do when teams stuff the run? The answer was only PUNT the ball all night.

Is Friday Knight Get Back Coach gonna pound his chest after this victory? He’ll say something dumb like Arroyo got Singiser and Chuck back and figured it out. No dummy, the MVL is just that bad and Arroyo sucks less

Please no players of the week for Mv post. I don’t even know how that would be possible after that game. Defense you have to change it up you don’t have the athletes for that.

They gave up ridiculous number to moribund Rosemead offense too; they gave 20 to Gab who hasn’t scored 20 in other 6 games . Not going to beat El Monte

Who was hired as MV’s defensive coordinator? 63 is a lot of points. MV needs to beat El Monte
