Spartans Still Undefeated, 42-13

(Pasadena) – Joe Bell threw for two touchdowns and ran for one and Dash Paper ran for 192 yards and two scores to lead La Canada to a 42-13 win over Maranatha Thursday night at Keith Family Field.

The Spartans led 21-7 at the half and then broke it wide open in the second half and had a running clock in the fourth quarter.

After stopping Maranatha on fourth down on their opening drive on the La Canada 35-yard line the Spartans needed just one play to score. Paper broke a couple of tackles and rumbled 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Maranatha answered with a quick four-play drive of its own. Cooper Berry connected with Nico Vergara who juked a couple of defenders and weaved his way for a 69-yard score to even it at seven. La Canada reeled off the next 35 points.

First CJ Mattmann capped a 90-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to put the Spartans up 14-7. On their next possession it was another big play. Bell hit Brandon Mohaghegh for a 43-yard touchdown strike. La Canada took the 14-7 lead into the half.

The onslaught continued in the second half. On the Spartans first drive of the third quarter they went 65 yards on seven plays with Bell keeping it himself for a 19-yard touchdown scamper.

On the next series LC again went 65 yards. This time Bell tossed his second touchdown of the night with a 21-yard dart to Jakob Kim with 3:24 left in the third quarter. Just like that it was 35-7 Spartans.

La Canada added one more early in the fourth to start the running clock when Paper scored on a 13-yard jaunt.

Maranatha scored the last touchdown of the night on a 24-yard pass from Berry to Bradley Loiacono.

Paper needed just 19 carries to rack up the 192. Bell threw for 86 yards and a score and ran for 49 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

For Maranatha Berry threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns and Vergara had seven receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown.

With the victory La Canada remained perfect improving to 5-0. The Minutemen dripped to 3-2 overall.
