(Montebello) – David Ramos has returned as the head football coach at Schurr he confirmed Friday. Ramos, who stepped away from the head coaching position for one year, replaces Austin Montoya who resigned Thursday to take over as the head coach at St. Paul.

Ramos spent 10 years in his first stint at Schurr and had an overall record of 69-34 during his tenure. The Spartans went 3-8 in the playoffs in that span and won four Almont League titles.

Ramos served as the offensive coordinator at Schurr last season.

In Ramos’ third year in 2017 Schurr went 10-2 overall and won the Almont League. The Spartans beat Santa Ana Valley in the first round of the CIF Division 12 playoffs but fell in the second round to Santa Maria.

Schurr won the Almont in each of the Ramos’ last two seasons going 9-2 each year. In 2024 the Spartans were bumped up to Division 6 after a regular season run of 9-1, (5-0 in league) but they fell in the first round to Muir 22-19.

Last season, in Montoya’s only year, the Spartans had an overall record of 7-4 which included a perfect 5-0 record in the Almont League. Schurr lost in the first round of the CIF Division 7 playoffs to Saugus 22-19.

“I was going to let them know I would return to the coaching staff but when we found out Austin was leaving I decided to take it a step further and become the head coach. It took us about an hour and a half to hammer everything out,” Ramos said. “It will bring a consistency to the program. These are good kids. I’m fired up and ready to go.”

In accounting, switching numbers to places where they don’t belong is called a transposition. The same thing just occurred in local football. Ramos is the guy who would be a better fit for the Swordsmen, leaving Montoya to gain more experience with the Spartans. While I wish both men well, it’s Ramos who is set to have smooth sailing, while Montoya just booked passage on the Titanic.
