If I recall correctly WC had this great intimidation tactic. They had their skill guys on the field first and they were not small, warming up and then they brought out their bubbas thumping onto the field like the monsters they were. The huge linemen that WC had on those teams were big reasons for their success.
Impressive that Maggiore was able to beat Podley and Medrano. Although Mike is a pretty big guy and works out alot.
I went to that game and saw many great assistant coaches on both sidelines. Some were former head coaches and some became head coaches. There were also a bunch of athletes out there who played their hearts out! Memorable game for sure!
When West Covina edged Bonita in the Southeast championship game I recall seeing both teams in the LA Times top ten. D2 or D3 at least. That game was the best high school game I ever saw. Standing roon only crowd and teams that played their hearts out. Maggiore vs Podley-Medrano.
Those old WC teams would probably be D-5 at best. Last year’s WC team was D-7. They have a very good program.
I remember how formidable WC was, back when they fielded a team that wiped out La Serna 84-21, which meant the defense was scoring on top of what the offense did. Now, the Bulldogs are a rather run-of-the-mill operation, hanging around in the mid range of things, not anywhere near the threat they used to be.
