lM? I recall not so long ago lM had the longest Cif playoff entering in California. I think it ended possibly year after Muschetti left , and he left few years after LM won Cif and state of california. LM football was pretty good even after Mele and staff left and Coach Rush took over with a very good group of athletes. Mayfair took over the Suburban league again while LM earned the playoffs as second and third place league finishers> >> . They definitely still had quite a few very good players in the program and even McGill who played for Utah and then Raiders. Quite a few players Rush and staff coached earned football scholarships immediately after high school, but mostly after they played for Fullerton and Cerritos (? possibly other teams) College a couple years. Both colleges h, especially Fullerton college battle for league and southern california championships regularly.

reality ? Is that ‘I differ with you that LS had a chance to move into D1! When did you hear it was possible? Just don’t make logical sense to me, although I am far from an expert on this blog. I use my high school football sense of past and present times to try to make good commentary. And when is the last time a high school team has jumped up this much , as you said, from a division ?? (what was LS two or three years ago? D4 or 5) into D1 and in same division as Centennial, Mater Dei , Santa Margarita and other such perennial power houses? LS has been very very good in playoffs also, but never had to go through teams like the ones in D! Mr Peterson have you ever heard or researched CIF boards mentioning La Serna has a chance to go up that far?

I have seen Glendale play and they are a scrappy bunch. They play hard throughout the game and never quit. RB is a shifty, patience runner and has the ability to break big runs. I think the Arroyo game was when they put it altogether and were able to come out with the win. Like has been said, they have been knocking on the door and the knights opened it. Arroyo have some schematic issues on defense to work out. Lots of bad angles and tackling. That Glendale rb took advantage of that.

That’s the thing. If they had been more clutch against San Gabriel and Canyon they would have won and if they hadn’t got off to such a slow start against Big Bear they could have won as well. I think they learned from their late game mistakes to beat Arroyo and the results of that game showed. I’m not saying they are the greatest team ever obviously but they had a shot to win every game outside of the Santa Fe game.

Solid game for LS against CDM I think that was a loss the LS faithful shouldn’t mind having because if they go into league and go 4-1 or 5-0 that would put them in D2/3. I think they’re a solid/good D4 or D5 team. Everyone wants to go 10-0 but now you can’t you end up with a road game against Long Beach Poly or Oak Hills. This has happened to Schurr a few times like when they had to go to Muir, this year they go maybe 4-6 and get in a better division for them.

I think after the season SP has to rebuild a solid program even if that competing in D6-8 in a preseason against teams like Northview, La Serna, La Mirada, West Covina, St.Francis, Mayfair would all be solid games to have lined up in preseason.

Seeing people on other post talk about Mark Keppel schedule scrubs and are 3-2 now, dude MK didn’t get a W for four years. They scheduled MK for the same reason. Winning has to start somewhere not saying it’s gonna lead to a playoff run or even a league win but 3 Ws is better than 0.

I need to catch a Cantwell game they look like fun.

Nogales was picked to come in 4th by some people they could win league and make a good run in the right division. Their HC is real good and they’re only gonna get better after this week.

Seeing Arroyo where they are at right now is crazy, I don’t expect them to be a powerhouse but Glendale? Lopez is a dude he needs to get out while he can he has the size to go somewhere but not playing Keppel, MV and Glendale he ain’t. Maybe he could be the SP QB next year.

@BHF … I haven’t seen Glendale play live , yet still I must question your conclusions . The RB is great and the QB is athletic and talented but …
Glendale could be 5-1 ???? Honestly they are much closer to 1-5 !
They were blown out by Santa Fe in game one . The Big Bear game was not close – the team traveling 100 miles was up 14-0 after the first quarter and had two score lead throughout the game .
The lost close game to SG Green – that is their only victory of the year
They lost close game to Canyon – that is their only victory of the year
They defeated woebegone Lincoln – winless and blown out in every game
It’s a step in right direction to defeat Arroyo in close game , but obviously Knight fans has feelings about calls in that game .

Now they have a weird schedule . They will get blown out by Royal. Two week bye ??? They are not beating Arcadia ; that puts them at 2-6 before the fateful league games you mention .
Winning close games requires poise and execution under pressure, which is about teamwork and discipline – not individual play .
The Glendale V Hoover game will carry significance it hasn’t seen in decades this year

    @ Hala,
Couldn’t agree more. Glendale has finally found a good QB considering the level of teams they are playing and an absolute stud of an RB that would probably even do well at bigger schools. They definitely can beat Temple City and Hoover to make the playoffs and may even give Arcadia a harder game than expected. This is a different GHS team than people are used to seeing and now that their league is actually at their level, the results are going to show. They may not make it that far in the postseason but they have a good culture and a very bright future ahead of them.

Maverick? I believe the defensive backs for La Serna (and CDM also) are coached with correct fundamentals!, In this special situation I believe the DB played with absolute correct fundamentals by using his front arm /hand to knock football out of it’s path toward the receivers hand or body. His Other arm/hand should have been behind the receiver’s back and used to make the tackle if the ball was successfully caught. I was not there but I think, without claiming I know it all, the kid played it right

There was an obnoxious amount of penalties called one sided during this game against Arroyo. They always seemed to come when Arroyo was driving to slow down the drive.

This coach staff has had these boys ready to play every week. They lost last night on a tipped at the 5 yrd line and caught in the end zone. A few unlucky breaks and a crazy amount of one sided penalties led to the loss.

The Diamond schools are not diamonds but glass. With all the athletes in the area how is it the Pomona area schools are so god awful? Looking at the SGV playing schools outside the area is Keppel the best team from the SGV right now?Are CIF refs truly earning the big raises they demanded? Too many look old and fat and look lost and can barely make it up and down the field. Sometimes it looks like they drop flags so they can rest and slow walk. Nogales and Baldwin Park are looking good with all their transfers with more on the way. Is Bonita #1 now and are they really an SGV team? Not really. They are an Inland Empire team but the MVS loves them no matter what.

I sat in stunned disbelief as I watched Gab roll over Rosemead . 38-7. It would have been running clock had Gab been able to kick an extra point . I almost said “ “dismantled “. , but Rosemead unraveled all by themselves .
Omg – what happened ? Just 5 years ago when coached by Casteneda , Rosemead beat Gab 70-7. Administration made a fateful decision in choosing Slayton over other qualified candidates in spring 2022 and it’s been a quick slide to the bottom of league , rankings , rivalries ever since !
For some reason , administration stuck with Slayton through forfeits and brawls for four long years … now when he leaves they hire a guy who went 0-9 at Gab ??!!!

I guess if you have previous head coaching experience and had a cup of coffee in NFL, that’s enough for administration to think you are a great hire …
What I saw last night was distressing for Panther faithful. You don’t have to be an analytics expert to question why a team would punt on 4th and 8 from your opponents 33 yard line – on multiple occasions. The decision is amplified because the Rosemead punt is dog poop- one bad snap was recovered in end zone by Gab ; another bad snap was kicked on ground towards sideline when Gab player picked up the rolling ball and ran 30 yards down sideline , resulting in a net loss of 25 yards on attempted punt . These two plays occurred at key points when game was still closely contested and broke game wide open .
Two minute drill at end of half was mismanaged just when they had shot to get points on board . I could go on and on

They have talent , particularly on offensive side. One of the bigger OLines for that level in area . A shifty running back , a strong QB who can run and throw . It looks like 6 plays in the playbook – of course go to the Wildcat formation when you are down 3 scores !
So with the thrashing in this rivalry game Panthers once dominated it’s now clear : any vestige of Panther tradition and pride has evaporated and moved a mile west from Rosemead Blvd to San Gabriel Blvd .

    @Maverick

With the La Serna offense being pass happy this game, and Long considered to be a legit D1 prospect, less than a minute to score to win the game sounds like a golden opportunity for Long and company to prove they are the better team. I don’t buy the “we just ran out of time” excuse that I hear from the LS faithful (not just here but around the community and in other online spaces). CDM had the same 48 minutes as La Serna and found a way to win.

Believe me I think La Serna will be okay and it was a helluva game to say the least, but it would be a disservice to make excuses based on the refs, the time keeper, or anyone else outside of the football program. That’s not how you get better. They’ll come back next week ready to go. The key phrase should be “finish” from here on out.

    @LS

Bringing up race and property values in regards to a football game is beyond embarrassing. I hope this is just some misguided “fan” or some immature recent alumni talking and not a parent. No one gives af if your home is worth that much – they just handed you an L on the football field. Deal with reality and stop giving La Serna a bad rep.

One last thought. The vast majority of the La Serna players
That have produced big for them in the past, present, and future do not reside up in the hill in 5 million dollar estates. Mostly from surrounding districts or benefiting from open enrollment. If CDM knew they were playing a school neighboring 5 million dollar estates the hometown refs wouldn’t have affected the game so much. Bye now!

If any of you were at the game, you know what happened. LS came out flat, and the CDM QB and receivers were eating our secondary alive. We got down by two scores early, but we finally got a few plays together to make it 16-10 at the half.
We got the ball to start the second half and took the lead at 17-16. I’m not going to lie, there were some questionable calls by the refs, but I’m not gonna make excuses or say that’s why we lost.
After a great defensive stand to stop CDM, we got the ball back and fumbled on the 1-yard line. They easily pushed it in for a score. In the 4th, when we got the ball back, we scored in a few minutes, making it 24-22 LS, leaving almost 5 minutes on the clock, way too much time for CDM to work with. On one particular play, our DB went up for an interception and tipped it with one hand. I’m not going to play the “what if” game, but if he had gone up with two hands, that could’ve been the game. CDM then pushed the ball down the field and scored with a minute left. Their two-point conversion made it 30-24 CDM, leaving not enough time for our offense to answer.
One thing I have to say: the timekeeper was horrible. A few times in the 4th quarter, the clock just wasn’t running. That guy needs to be fired, I was wondering what was going on out there.
Anyway, it was a great, evenly matched game. LS will bounce back. Don’t count us out just yet!

Looks like La Serna won’t be bumped up to #1 in next week’s rankings. Heck, La Serna might not even win league, since a strong Downey team stands in the way this year. As for CIF, well, there are plenty of very tough teams similar to CDM that are waiting hungrily to devour Whittier’s finest. Sorry about that.
