The TEN
(“The TEN” is not a top ten but ten items worth being included in “The TEN”)
1.)—Brewers take 3-0 NLCS lead over Dodgers — Milwaukee beat Los Angeles 6-2 in Game 3 behind back-to-back seventh-inning homers by Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell off Blake Snell (after Jackson Chourio’s leadoff homer on the first pitch). The Brewers are one win from their first World Series since 1982.
2.)— Ohio State (#4) versus Indiana (#5) on Saturday. The cheapest seat at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington will run $430, but there are still some $1,000+ tickets available.
3.)—“These are systemic inequalities – problems so deep-rooted that, in fact, I’m glad that high-school students and young people in general are speaking up. I hear them, and I support them, and I hope the people at the very top will do the same.”—San Antonio Spurs center, Victor Wembanyama on the riots/protests in Paris, France.
4.)—“The Long-to-Armenta duo is going to be La Serna’s ace in the hole versus Downey. I dare say that Downey-LS has totally replaced the excitement formerly reserved for Downey-Warren.”—MVS commenter, “Key to League”
5.)—Thursday Night Football: Seahawks at Broncos. The game will broadcast on Prime, and 189 bucks will get you inside Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
6.)—ALCS tied 1-1; Game 3 moved earlier for rain — The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Baseball Team are even after the Rays Game 2 victory. Game 3 starts at 1 p.m. ET today in Cleveland.
7.)—Multiple reports from this week describe tensions between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman over their ESPN contract situations, including a reported pregame argument. Buck is inked through 2031, Aikman is in the final year of the deal he signed in 2022. Aikman in a radio interview would not confirm or deny an argument between himself and Buck.
8.)—Former Temple City LB Carlos Mota turns 32 today.
9.)—On this date in 1988: Kirk Gibson’s iconic pinch-hit, walk-off two-run home run off Dennis Eckersley in the bottom of the ninth of Game 1 of the World Series gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 win over the Oakland Athletics at Dodger Stadium. Gibson, hobbled by injuries to both legs, limped around the bases; it was his only plate appearance of the Series.
“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.”—Vin Scully
10.)—“I’ve talked to our students, our parents and our community about this and nobody finds any offense at all in it. ‘Redskins’ is not an insult to our kids. ‘Wagon burners’ is an insult. ‘Prairie n—–s’ is an insult. Those are very upsetting to our kids. But ‘Redskins’ is an honorable name we wear with pride. … In fact, I’d like to see somebody come up here and try to change it.”—Tim Ames, superintendent of Wellpinit schools, where the Wellpinit Redskins play with a student body that is 91.2% Native American.
