Schurr Runs Past El Monte, 42-7

By Rich Whittington

(Montebello) – The Schurr Spartans celebrated Homecoming in a grand fashion Friday evening defeating the visiting El Monte Lions 42-7, at Ken Davis Field.

El Monte opened the scoring thanks to a couple of tricks that they had up their collective sleeves. First the Lions’ kicker Giovani Meza recovered his own onside kick attempt giving El Monte the ball on the Spartans’ 42-yard line. Then, on the first play from scrimmage, El Monte executed a perfect 58-yard “double-pass” from quarterback Luis Gonzalez to running back Meza to wideout Xavier Juarez. Meza added the PAT making the score 7-0 with 11:41 remaining in the opening quarter. Unfortunately for the Lions’ faithful, this would prove to be El Monte’s only highlight, as well as their only scoring opportunity.

Schurr scored on their next possession, when quarterback Jacob Torres found the end zone on a 6-yard run. The extra was successful making the score 7-7 with 9:10 remaining in the first period. The Spartans added two more rushing touchdowns in the quarter. The first was a 2-yard pop by running back Jacob Morago. The second offering was a 6-yard offering by running back Nathan Flores to increase the lead to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans’ scoring barrage continued into the second period, as Schurr added another pair of scores. The first score was added by Jesse Sandoval, who scored on a 3-yard touchdown blast. The second score was a 38-yard connection from Torres to wide receiver Nate Tellez and Schurr was cruising 35-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter Edgar Arceo hit pay dirt on a 7-yard scamper to make it 42-7, with 6:43 remaining in the period.

With a running clock that was the final tally of the contest.

El Monte, (2-7, 0-2) will finish their season next Friday, as they travel to “The Ranch” to meet the El Rancho Dons (7-2, 2-0). Next up for the Spartans (3-6, 1-1) is a trip to Bell
