Monsoon running back Jerry Smith scored on a 1-yard run in overtime but it was kicker David Grkinich who provided the edge in Mayfair’s 36-35 victory over Norwalk on Friday night.
The Lancers tied the game late at 29-29, but with eight seconds left attempts a 41-yard field goal. Abraham Rodriguez’s kick hits the crossbar, but a roughing the kicker penalty moved the ball to the Monsoon 21 with time for one more play.
Mayfair holds off Norwalk with a sack and the game rolled into OT.
Smith, big playmaker all year, scored on a one yard run but Grkinich added the extra point and roughed on the play. This resulted in the Lancers begining their first OT possession at the 30 instead of the 25.
The Lancers would score, but failed on the deuce to give the Monsoons the one point victory.
Despite the loss, Jacquise Hooper and Rashaad Penny combined for 279 rushing yards for Norwalk.
