East Takes West in Double OT

By Steven Mercado

(Cerritos)- The 46th annual 605 All Star Football Classic held at Cerritos College Stadium required extra football Friday night to determine the winner. After two overtime periods, the East overcame the West and earned a 28-21 victory.

The first play from scrimmage resulted in an East fumble that was recovered by the West. Long Beach Wilson’s Tonny Lindsey then scored from six yards out for a 7-0 West lead. Their next possession, the West drove down field and capped off the drive with another Lindsey touchdown. The East looked to be out of it after facing a 21-7 deficit towards the end of the third quarter, but after a trick play and capitalizing off a big pick, the East sent the game to overtime. In the second overtime period, Orange Lutheran running back Tavi Jimmerson pounded the ball into the endzone to win the game for the East.

*** The two Lindsey touchdowns mentioned above were both scored in the first quarter. After the second touchdown was scored, Lindsey was not given another carry until the East tied the game in the fourth quarter.

*** Fountain Valley quarterback Chris D’Entremont only saw the field for one drive, but he capped off the drive with a 10-yard quarterback draw that resulted in a leap into the endzone as defenders pursued him. This was the first touchdown of the game for the East.

*** The West’s third and final touchdown in the game came in the third quarter by way of a goalline handoff to Paramount running back Deonte Dixon.

*** Following a three and out possession by the West, the East threw some trickery into the mix. Sonora quarterback Kyle Malhsted took the snap, handed it off to Estancia running back Robert Murtha, and Murtha threw the ball down field to Mayfair wide receiver Aaron Minor Jr. who had nothing but daylight in front of him. This touchdown brought the East one step closer to their comeback victory, making the score 21-14.

*** The West tried throwing in some trickery of their own by giving Lindsey a chance to throw, but the play resulted in an interception by Esperanza free safety Austin Steele, who brought the ball within ten yards of another score.

*** The East capitalized on this opportunity by giving the ball to Tustin running back Terrance Martinez, who scored after back-to-back running plays for him. This play tied the game at 21.

*** The West’s defense smothered the East early on; all three of their first quarter possessions resulted in a three and out.

*** Steele’s first interception of the game was also a key one. It came towards the end of the first quarter as the West brought the ball into the red zone. They got as far as the East’s 11-yard line until Compton quarterback Dillon Okray took a chance to throw the ball into coverage and Steele picked it off, preventing the game from being blown open early to a 21-0 lead. Steele finished the game with two interceptions.

*** The next West possession resulted in another interception by Okray. Mayfair defensive back Keenan Wright grabbed the pick and brought it to the West’s 20-yard line. The ensuing drive resulted in the East’s first touchdown of the game.

*** The East’s first pass completion came on the second play of their first possession in the second quarter.

*** Jimmerson’s stats prior to second overtime: four attempts for six yards. In second overtime, he ran the ball twice; once for five yards and the second time was the game-winning touchdown.
