(Los Angeles) – Windward  survived a scare in its opener against Hamilton with a 20-17 win on Friday afternoon. A game that took nearly three-hours to complete due to injuries and turnovers wasn’t decided until a late score from Austin Webster reception.

Starting Wildcat quarterback Conner Simpson was shaky early on but finished the day going 19-of-30 for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Drew Bryant was held to just seven yards rushing, but helped Simpson out with seven receptions for 84 yards.

The Yankees had on final attempt to get the lead back with under three minutes to play but Kyshawn Richards fumbled and Windward’s Alex Rubinek recovered to seal the win.

Windward came right back on both of Hamilton’s score to tie the game at 7 and 14.

Breeland Brandt had two sacks, one coming late in the game on the final series for the Yankees.

Noah Landry picked off a deflected pass in the first quarter and during the dive was injured.

The Wildcats turned the ball over five times.

Webster finished with 12 catches and 106 yards.
