Matadors Too Hot to Handle

(San Gabriel)-The San Gabriel Matadors overwhelmed the visiting Alhambra Moors to the tune of a 52-14 victory Friday Night in Almont League play.

Isaac Valdez (18-28 226-yards) accounted for five of San Gabriel’s nine touchdowns, four on the ground and one through the air.

Alhambra struck first with a 16 play-drive late in the first quarter, which culminated with 1-yard touchdown run by Brandon Wilson.

SG tied the score at seven, midway through the second quarter with a Valdez 1-yard quarterback sneak. On their next drive Valdez again found the end zone from 4-yards out.

After a Mitchell Crockom fumble, which was caused by the Matadors Alex Lopez, Valdez and company were setup for another score that came in the form of an Arthur Brown 9-yard touchdown run. SG led 19-7 with about two minutes left.

Alhambra’s Darrian Cazarin led his team down to the San Gabriel 3-yard line with big play passes to Joseph Becerra and Wilson. A critical mistake of spiking the ball on fourth down by Cazarin ended Moors hopes to score before half. They trailed 19-7 at halftime.

Valdez continued his great night with another rushing touchdown to start the third quarter.

Cazarin strung together a 14 play-drive and found Crockom 33-yards down field for their second and last touchdown of the night.

The Matadors scored on two consecutive drives and added to their lead with a Valdez pass to Mark Covarrubias and Valdez’s final touchdown run

SG’s final touchdown came way of a 45-yard interception return by sophomore Alex Villalobos.

The Matadors are now 3-0 in the Almont league and The Moors drop to 1-2.
