(San Marino)- La Canada (4-3, 2-1) upset San Marino (6-2, 1-2) at Titan Stadium 14-10 on Friday night in Rio Hondo League play
The Titans were the team with the upper hand at the end of the first half. On its second drive of the contest San Marino, using the arm of Joe Forgatch and the pounding running attack of Benny Hung, went ahead on Hung’s two yard blast into the end zone. After Stevie Yortsos point after it was 7-0.
The Spartans came out of the locker room at the beginning of the second half and marched 70-yards and scored the equalizing touchdown when Rocky Moore went 24-yards to Kevin Hurlbutt.
After the touchdown LC kept control. The game went back and forth but the field position battle belonged to the visitors.
Then with 5:31 left in the fourth quarter San Marino took the lead on a 27 yard field goal by Stevie Yortsos, making it 10-7. This go ahead score was set up by two Spartan late hit penalties on Titan incomplete passes.
With 3:21 left in the game LC capped a 60 yard drive with a 3-yard Moore touchdown pass to Daleep Sandhu. After the successful PAT by Stephen Hernandez, La Canada had the 14-10 lead.
San Marino got the ball back and had enough time to score but its hopes ended in the hands of LC’s Josh Hanson as he picked off Forgatch’s late pass attempt, sealing the victory for the Spartans.
