(Montebello) – South El Monte took a 13-0 lead into the fourth quarter but Montebello third string quarterback Michael Valle made it disappear in 20 seconds and led the Oilers to a 21-19 win over the Eagles Thursday night at Heaman Field.
Eagles quarterback Erick Cazarez pounded the ball down the field on their second drive of the game and it was capped off with a two-yard touchdown scamper making it 6-0 after a missed extra point.
On South El Monte’s next possession Cazarez found Christopher Vasquez on a 38-yard bomb putting the Eagles on the two-yard line and two plays later Marco Sarabia punched it in to make it 13-0.
Both teams threw interceptions and exchanged punts until early in the fourth quarter.
After Oilers second string quarterback Pasel Soto went 4 of 12 for 37-yards and a interception, Valle came in and used his legs scoring on runs of one and 43-yards 20-seconds apart giving Montebello the lead 14-13.
Montebello got a onside kick when Christopher Trigueros dove into the pile and came out with the ball.
Oilers then went and tacked on to their lead using ground and pound as Enrique Hidalgo took it to paydirt making it 21-13.
Eagles almost tied it up when Marco Sarabia took a reverse 47-yards to cut the lead to 21-19 but the two point conversion failed.
Valle ended with four carries for 73-yards and two scores and Isaiah Lugo had a interception for the Oilers.
Cazarez went 6 of 10 for 66-yards and a interception and he also had 79-yards on the ground. Ramos had 12 carries for 12 yards and score and Sarabia had 63-yards and two touchdowns. Jonthan Portillo had a pick for the Eagles.
Next week Montebello will stay home and face El Rancho while South El Monte will battle Bell Gardens next Friday at home.
South El Monte blew this game. They had plenty of opportunities to put away the oilers early but they squandered those chances with costly mistakes and the inability to finish drives. They left the door open and the oilers capitalized setting up a wild 6 minute span in the 4th. If SEM can fix the mistakes and develop a killer instinct this team will challenge Arroyo for the crown. QB Cazares is quick as a cat providing big plays with his legs also he’s a stud on defense. The Backs are all decent and they have good size in the trenches. Defense is the calling card for sure, but the Offense needs to catch up. Always a good game when the Almont and the MVL get together.
South El Monte had several chances to put this game away early but squandered them away. They should have put up at least 3 more TDs in the first half but instead they left the door open for Montebello which set up a wild few minutes in the 4th. SEM blew this one but are talented for sure. Cazares is lightning quick at QB providing big plays with his legs and the backs are all pretty good. Other than the fourth the defense is solid. If the coaches can fix the mistakes SEM Vs Arroyo for league should be the deciding game.
Lol
Time to pencil in Montebello as almont league champs
