Alhambra Gets First Win with 48-8 Rout of Temple City

By Ron Vrooman

(Alhambra) – The Alhambra Moors dominated an overmatched Temple City team, 48-8, in a rare Thursday afternoon game at Moor Field. The nonleague victory improved Alhambra’s season record to 1-2, while Temple City fell to 0-2.

Alhambra quarterback Michael Gonzalez connected on eight of 12 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Moors kept the ball entirely on the ground after the halftime break. Six Alhambra ball carriers rushed for a combined total of 224 yards and four touchdowns. Junior tailback Stephan Gomez gained 71 yards in eight attempts, which included a 27-yard scoring run.

Another junior back, Erick Baray, rushed for 65 yards in seven carries. Baray also contributed heavily to the Moors’ best defensive performance so far in 2021, accounting for two of his team’s four pass interceptions against Temple City quarterback Jake Jones.

The Rams rushed for a total of -7 yards; all of their offense was generated by Jones, who completed 12 of 23 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. His 53-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Judah Douglas came on Temple City’s final play from scrimmage.

The Rams committed five turnovers in all and were also stopped on downs three times. The Moors’ offense converted six of those miscues into touchdowns.   Temple City will play at home against Mountain View this coming Friday night, while Alhambra’s next game will be at South Pasadena on Sept. 17.
