All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:
Thursday August 31
Diamond Bar (2-0) at Covina (2-0) (Covina District Field)
Covina is the talk of the town right now. The Colts have won their first two games and have outscored their opponents 82-14. Diamond Bar is 2-0 also and has put up 71 points of its own. Expect a lot of points as both teams will light up the scoreboard. The Brahmas defense makes a couple more stops. D Bar gets the W.
Diamond Bar 34 Covina 31
La Salle (1-1) at Bonita (2-0)
Last year La Salle surprised Bonita with an eight-point win. This year the Bearcats offense is rolling behind freshman quarterback Daniel Mielke II. Bonita has put up 80 points in two games. La Salle won its opener but struggled in a loss last week to Xavier Prep. Bonita has too many weapons for the Lancers to deal with. The Bearcats win their third straight.
Bonita 35 La Salle 21
South Pasadena (2-0) at Baldwin Park (1-1)
Maybe the game of the week right here. South Pasadena is 2-0 and while last week’s rout of Maywood was nice the Tigers most impressive win was in Zero Week over Schurr. Baldwin Park bounced back last week with a win over El Monte after falling in Zero Week to Montebello. South Pas is in a groove right now. Not sure if the Braves can make enough stops to get it done. Tigers improve to 3-0.
South Pasadena 35 Baldwin Park 24
Friday September 1
Charter Oak (1-1) at Glendora (2-0) (Citrus College)
Charter Oak lost to Chino Hills by four last week while Glendora beat the Huskies by four in Zero Week. The Tartans, trying to turn things around from last season, have handled two tough opponents. The Chargers are even at 1-1 splitting its first two games. Could come down to a field goal in the fourth quarter. Glendora gets it done.
Glendora 24 Charter Oak 21
El Rancho (2-0) at Monrovia (0-1)
El Rancho has been somewhat of a surprise this year. The Dons outlasted Don Lugo in the opener and then crushed Bell Gardens last week. Monrovia only has one game under its belt after flooding in Palm Springs caused a cancellation last week. The Wildcats had 56 dropped on them by Bonita in Zero Week but the Bearcats are legitimate. However so are the Dons. El Rancho got humbled by Monrovia last year and are looking to reverse things. Monrovia can score but can the Cats make enough stops? The Dons come out on top.
El Rancho 38 Monrovia 35
Warren (1-1) at La Serna (1-1) (California)
La Serna lost a close one to Warren last year. This year the Lancers, who always have murderer’s row in non league, lost to Los Alamitos last week after pummeling Pasadena in the opener. Warren is 1-1 also after being shut out by Serra last week. This is a different Warren team. The Bears are always in the mix but they did lose their D-1 quarterback to graduation. He’s now at Tennessee. La Serna jumps out in front early and holds on for the win.
La Serna 28 Warren 24
South El Monte (2-0) at Montebello (1-1)
South El Monte looks like a team to be reckoned with this year in the Mission Valley League. The Eagles blew out Alhambra then handled Bishop Montgomery. While understood that they didn’t beat St. John Bosco and Mater Dei, the Eagles are still 2-0. Montebello rallied to beat Baldwin Park two weeks ago but were blanked last week by Cantwell. If South El Monte can win this one the Eagles could head into league play at 5-0. They hold off the Oilers and remain undefeated.
South El Monte 24 Montebello 17
South Hills (1-1) at Northview (1-1) (Covina District Field)
Northview traveled all the way to Vegas last week but fell short to Sierra Vista. The Vikings were dominant in a Zero Week win over Muir. South Hills won its opener but was pounded last week by Covina. Northview has two solid backs and will also pound the ball…again and again. The Vikes defense is solid as well. South Hills will eventually wear down. Northview wins.
Northview 35 South Hills 13
Cantwell (1-1) at La Canada (2-0)
Is this the year La Canada breaks through in the Rio Hondo? The Spartans are off to a good start towards that goal as they have scored 105 points in their first two victories. Cantwell had a nice bounce back win last week over Montebello after taking one on the chin against Village Christian. Cantwell’s defense is good but is it stout enough to hold off La Canada? For awhile maybe but La Canada will pull away in the second half. Spartans win their third straight.
La Canada 31 Cantwell 17

I was very wrong in my assessment of the current state of affairs at LP. I said my long gone grandma could coach LP to a win against Webb. She could not. Neither could Peterson, The Matt V, Maxie or any other coaching geniuses. Coach Johnson my humble apologies. Your 2 straight wins to start the season put you in line for COY of the SGV.
@Anonymous no one was talking or criticizing coaches. The question here was how historically lower tier teams prefer cupcake pre-seasons. Then when league starts these teams don’t stand a chance. How about schedule 3 easy games to 2 moderate to hard games. Now you bring up Mtn. Views record last 4 years, 6 Wins and 34 Losses. Maybe we should question these coaches and why its taking them so long to show a positive outcome. Four years is enough time to evaluate a coaching staff, if they’re not changing the culture in that time? Then its time for a change? At some point a coach needs to understand that he’s not turning a program like La Puente, Keppel and Mtn. View around. I applaud them for trying but if you don’t see results its time to turn the page.
What happened tonight Maxi? Who you going to blame for tonight’s debacle. Impressive that you managed to get two TD’s against South Pas 2nd string Defense.
About the La Puente situation: That one hits a bit close to home for me having went through LPJAA and having familial ties to the program in the past. Objectively though, while I count myself in the camp of those disappointed with the schedule to which Coach Johnson is referring. Yet, objectively speaking still, I’m more ambivalent about it than anything. On the one hand, cupcakes galore, yes, but I have to say I support the scheduling to a degree given the dwindling numbers he mentioned. Then there’s the picture of the post-game huddle in the paper. Yikes! He wasn’t kidding. Now, I know LPHS hasn’t exactly been stacked with players in recent years, but given the current social climate for these boys and the lack of participation in anything extracurricular and the discipline-self-reliance that comes with it, I must concede I’m not totally against it–for now. Some things are larger than football, and that truth is part of the point of playing HS ball is it not?
@ Just the facts: I apologize for my lateness to the discussion; I’ve been busy with stat work, putting out the in-house newsletter for our followers at AHS, and subbing in the Physical Education Department the last three days.
Alhambra is a bit on the metaphorical back foot at the moment, after getting run over (and around) by a Wilson back who might be the second coming of Christian Okoye. His name is Dominic Ezeonye; you might hear more about him in the near future.
Our guys are working hard to win the next game, and that’s our philosophy every week.
TheRanch18: You mean, they’ve killed the importance of league games, just like they had already killed the importance of having a good overall record? The previous playoff format had a few flaws, but it was great compared to the current joke that the CIF Southern Section has imposed on us.
lets be honest, CiF has killed the importance of League. Now its more of bragging rights.
@MVL observer Mountain View has won a total of 6 games in the last 4 seasons so what not Keppel why not century why schedule tougher if in the past the weren’t able to beat those teams! Instead of criticizing give credit to those coaches who are working hard to make those schools better and changing the culture on campus!
That’s part of the schtick…..Coach tells press, parents , administrators how great the -70
type teams are .
The parents don’t know , they just want the team to win and the boys to be happy . Soon they will be saying this is the best LaPuente team in years , and if they can stay in D14 may make playoff run .
Go Gauls !
@Pac 5 Scout same thing is happening to lower level teams. look at Mountain View they’re 2-0, they have a chance to go 4-1 or 5-0 in pre-season. They beat Mark Keppel and Bassett. What good does that do to kids when everyone in their League is better than any team they play in pre-season. We still don’t know how Good TC is? Why play Keppel, Century and Workman? Would like to see them schedule harder opponents. La Puente vs Mtn. View would of been a better pre-season game than Workman? Gabrielino’s pre-season is more respectable on paper, they can go 0-5 in pre-season and still beat Mtn. View just cause of a harder pre-season schedule. Don’t kill the messenger just stating facts….
I am intrigued with the La Puente situation. It shows with some fancy tap dancing even a 2022 -57 rated team can create a schedule that can get them to a 10-0 regular season. I read with interest LP’s coach saying that this weeks game against Webb a -72 team will be a mighty challenge for LP. After all Webb beat -97 rated Workman 64-0. To do this dance this coach went to the very bottom of the 1038 football teams in California to get his team a win although he let the -108 rated 1038th team Belmont spit the hook. My question is this, is this a coach or a mommy? I mean this quite literally my grandma could get wins coaching this schedule and she has been gone for some time now. Is this really instilling pride in the once proud La Puente football community? Maybe. What to I know. But I’am going to that game Thursday. This is a once in a lifetime matchup in reverse.
LS might even snap the ball against Warren LMAO!
Correct. This is just scheduling irony from the football gods ; still I’m predicting Sierra Vista in comfortable win.
I don’t think the staff has anything to do with Matt V. That was a few years before they got there. Just a week 3 game for them they’re trying to win.
This is same coach who was 0-10 at TC then bolted just prior to 2022 season .
Their schedule is laughable , but really this is good coaching , schedule teams that are severely challenged . Winning is the great elixir and weak teams make marginal coaching look good. This is the devolution of football in the SGV; all the releaguing and CIF format change rewards mediocrity or worse .
Still I predict that this weak schedule will ultimately backfire and La Puente will lose at least one league game to team they has played respectable opponent in preseason. Same thing happened to Azusa last year …:
I don’t think mattV is worried, SV aint got to many inches to give him. BG made sure of that.
Huevos Rancheros about to get a reality check by Monrovia, maybe then they will shut up.
I cant wait to hear the excuses once we beat Warren.
@CIF
Throwing shade on Alhambra already. Come on Statman defend your boys
hey now!!!
Absolute lock down bet. La Puente will go 10-0. I guess the HC wanted to make sure he gets another year or a better job offer. Wouldn’t even schedule Little Sisters of the Poor. Too good I guess.
Diamond Bar/Covina and Monrovia/El Rancho are the biggest toss ups
Diamond Bar 28 Covina 24
Bonita 42 La Salle 7
Glendora 21 Charter Oak 7
Monrovia 42 El Rancho 38
La Serna 35 Warren 17
Montebello 28 SEM 14
Northview 52 South Hills 21
La Canada 42 Cantwell 14
Matty V gonna need to lube up! SV looks forward to giving you every inch of payback!
After the CO vs CH game, does that ref still have a job? Terrible. Double PI 100 yrd pick six right in front of him. I hope the refs for the CO vs GHS game don’t decide that one too.
Perennial playoff warriors Alhambra may miss the playoffs this year unless they make a division 15.
Disagree a little: Marina, Crescenta Valley, Nogales, Montebello, Warren, Monrovia, Charter Oak, Covina all beat your picks. Sorry nobody out picks the ?.
From T. Peterson: Well I guess nobody out picks the ? …50 percent of the time. Ha ha. I missed a few too so I guess we’re even this week. Most of them could have gone either way. I was shocked that Nogales won. I’m not sure what you were thinking on the Charter Oak pick. To me that was a slam dunk for Glendora. Same with WestCo over CV.
