All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:
Friday October 6
La Canada (3-3) at San Marino (5-1)
Both teams won their Rio Hondo League openers last week. San Marino edged a previously unbeaten South Pas team while La Canada rolled Pasadena Poly. San Marino’s defense has been up to the task this year. Last week they were able to shut down the Tigers strong running game. The Titans’ front lines, offensive and defensive, will be too much for the Spartans. After winning last week the Titans have their eyes on the league title.
San Marino 21 La Canada 17
Thursday October 5
South El Monte (6-0) at Rosemead (2-4)
Rosemead has two wins but one of them came by way of a forfeit. South El Monte is on roll. The Eagles blasted El Monte last week and look like the favorite in the Mission Valley. Some people are saying that Rosemead is a different team now that the Panthers had some players transfer in. They still gave up 42 to Mt. View. South wins…big.
South El Monte 42 Rosemead 7
Friday October 6
Bell Gardens (3-3) at Schurr (5-1)
Schurr is the best team in the Almont There is really no question. The Spartans crushed San Gabriel last week and there’s no reason to believe they won’t do that again to BG. Bell Gardens won last week and is fighting for a playoff spot. Schurr gets the win going away.
Schurr 35 Bell Gardens 6
Arroyo (2-4) at El Monte (1-5)
Arroyo looked like itself last week in a big win over Gabrielino while El Monte was getting belted by South El Monte. This is a win the Knights need if they are going to win another MVL title. If the Lions competed against South last week they would have a chance here. They didn’t and they don’t. Arroyo rolls.
Arroyo 38 El Monte 14
Burroughs (5-1) at Muir (4-2)
Muir got a key Pacific League victory last week over Crescenta Valley. The Mustangs have another tough one this week against Burroughs. Burroughs bombed Pasadena last week but doesn’t everybody these days? Right now Muir is the best team in the Pacific until somebody proves otherwise. It will be a struggle but the Stangs win.
Muir 24 Burroughs 21
South Pasadena (5-1) at Monrovia (3-2)
Before last week this is a game many people thought South Pasadena would win. San Marino not only changed that thinking but also changed the dynamic in the Rio Hondo. Monrovia is still king in the Rio and it looks like the Wildcats are headed for a showdown with the Titans in Week 10. Monrovia needs to clear this hurdle first. The Cats will with flying colors.
Monrovia 28 South Pasadena 10
Damien (7-0) at Chino Hills (5-2)
This is another tough test for Damien but the Spartans have been up to very challenge so far. Chino Hills has won its last two games and is 5-2 overall but the Huskies haven’t faced a team like Damien yet. Matt Bechtel has this team at another level. Damien remains unbeaten.
Damien 41 Chino Hills 17
San Gabriel (2-4) at Montebello (3-3)
San Gabriel is 3-3 on the field but 2-4 overall due to a forfeit loss to Rosemead. The Matadors need this one after getting rolled by Schurr last week in the Almont League opener. Montebello beat up on Keppel last week but that’s as common as fans fighting at a Raider game. Should be a close game as both teams match up well. The Oilers get a kick and a victory late in the fourth quarter.
Montebello 27 San Gabriel 24

I was embarrassed to be a former football player. Please take notice you had four coaches in a circle not making adjustments on defense. The kids stop playing smh. The offense is so vanilla no spacing . We need change
Please fire the principal the football program is terrible you wanted chris Williams gone for this. The coaching staff is the wiorst I’ve seen. .
Yes that might be the worst defense in monrovia history……. the offense is so predictable . Your correct in your comments the principal must go now. Monrovia school board please take notice I’m embarrassed the direction the football program is going. We’re is the diversity on the coaching staff???
Monrovia school district you got what you wanted. The principal wanted chris Williams out well look what’s going on. You brought in a coach in over his head . Time to cut ties now don’t wait fire him now!!!!!!! Brought coaches with him how can’t coach were is the unity. We’ve been down this road before with chow city coaches don’t fit. The defense is the worst I’ve seen in twenty five years at monrovia. The grass is not greener on the other side. Question did chris Williams get kids in college,???? Monrovia community please stand up this is a terrible hire .
@ice cream man – aint lying bro, let me get some ice to cool down. lol
@anonymous – stay off my D man… lol.. SF aint gonna do a thing… and we still beating Ls ! SellOut
Transfers IN to Rosemead??? Now that’s something you don’t hear very often.
Grim, I love that you think SP can upset Monrovia, but no. Monrovia is 20-1 vs the Tigers since 2001. And the lone loss came way back in 2003 which was a down year for Monrovia as they didn’t even go to CIF that year. SP played a very weak non league schedule with only one quality opponent being Schurr on the first game. If you take out two blocked punts by SP that resulted in scores, Schurr probably wins the game as they were the better team in the 2nd half. Hong is good but not enough to carry the Tiger’s offense against a Monrovia team. San Marino exposed SP’s weakness which is the QB play. I see Monrovia winning by at least 2 touch downs if not more. Although SP’s program is in way better shape then it used to be, they still are not on Monrovia’s level yet.
Grim, I just don’t see SP beating the Cats. I would love nothing better than for SP to upset the Cats and throw a wrench into Monrovia’s dominance in the league. But SP is 1-20 against them since 2001 (according to CalPreps). And the one win was 20 years ago in 2003 which was a year that Monrovia was actually a non CIF team. SP has good talent but they are weak at QB. Hong is a beast but they will need more than him to beat Monrovia’s high flying attack. I would be surprised if SP is within 2 touchdowns of the Cats.
Final note– wild and wacky RHL
I am not buying the 17 or 18 point differential for SP v Monrovia
SP has given up an average of 12 points a game, there seems to be an underestimate of their defense.
I would attribute that to recency bias due to a hard fought rivalry loss 10-7 to SM.
Throw in a couple of turnovers and or penalties and you have close game that could start the wild and wacky
The RHL will be unpredictable again this week.
Step one to the wild and wacky finish will be SP upsetting Monrovia.
That will set up a potential three way tie for first place.. and coin flips score differentials etc tie breakers?
In the past the tie breakers did not work and two teams needed to travel to a neutral field to play a tie breaker immediately after their last games were over
Like I said wild and wacky.. It could happen if SP plays tough or Monrovia cracks and stacks up the penalty yardage.
ER18 is aka Heavy D. He’s okay just whines A LOT. His team blows and just likes to rant. Says the same thing every year but adds a new twist. Can’t wait to hear after the Santa Fe loss. get your popcorn.
@TheRanch18
You’ve been out in the sun too long bruh go chill out inside somewhere safe.
South side Foolie stay focused about El Monte
Everyone thought SV would be a lot better this year .,::: Coach C did a great job of making SV respectable last year, and further movement in that direction was reasonable .
It was always a pre League tuneup for Bonita , but this type of mismatch surprising
Rosemead always plays SEM tough. I wouldn’t be surprised if the beat them.
YOUR OWN COACH, AD, ADMIN, TEACHER AND STAFF for that matter… if you WORK for a school and you send your child to another…. – Your a SELLOUT …. go work somewhere else, these kids need leaders that believe in them. Not people just trying to collect a PAYCHECK… and we wonder why everything is fd up
If that is true about the AD’s son playing at Bonita, it’s a great way to stick it to them and some signs of incompetency. I mean why would you put Bonita on the schedule…Well I must say mom really know how to win.
