[Covina] – Marquis Monroe had three scores and the defense had four takeaways in Ayala’s 45-10 Mountain West League victory Thursday night at Charter Oak.
The Chargers started off bad when Isaiah Perez fumbled the opening kickoff giving the Bulldogs a short field resulting in a 25-yard field goal from Nick Lane.
Charter Oak punted on its first drive.
Monroe broke for his first touchdown of the game – an 82-yarder to paydirt for Ayala midway through the first quarter.
The Chargers took the field and gave the ball right back when a Corin Berry pass was tipped and picked off by Drew Amico.
The Bulldogs took advantage as Monroe again scored on a two-yard plunge into the end zone making it 17-0.
Both teams exchanged punts on their next possessions.
Charter Oak got on the board when Carson Cordova hit a 43-yard field goal late in the second quarter.
Ayala answered right back and then some when quarterback Maximus Barroso hit Jaden Valenzuela putting the score at 24-3 at the half.
The Bulldogs took over first in the second half and Monroe got his third score of the night when he caught a 35-yard pass from Barroso.
The Chargers showed some fight and pounded the ball down the field and capped the drive with a three-yard dive into the end zone from Curtiss Taylor.
Ayala punted but Alden Santos picked off a Perry pass and took it 55-yards for the score making it 38-10.
Perry then lost a fumble on the next Charter Oak possession.
Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize this time as Lane missed a 50-yard field goal. But they did get the ball right back when Dawaun Nettingham II intercepted another Perry pass.
This time Barroso scored himself for Ayala when he pushed it in from one yard out.
Bulldogs improved to 5-4 and have a date with Alta Loma next week while the Chargers (2-7) will face Bonita in the regular season finale.
