@ Anonymous & Money Matters: I guess the FBS/NCAA Division I has just turned into a baby NFL. For a long time, I favored the idea of compensating players who were bringing in enormous amounts of revenue for their schools. Years ago, they were getting little to nothing besides a free ride on tuition.
The top college football programs are now essentially professional organizations, with the transfer portal, the amounts of money that you mentioned being paid to players, and the NIL deals for the biggest stars. This has gotten way out of hand.
The superstars on the academic side, as well as lowly assistant professors, ought to get a little something based on their achievements if we’re going to pay student-athletes on this scale. That could be at least a partial solution to the student loan debt crisis.

It does but people don’t know what is really going on inside, for example the backup RB was asking for $600k, he has undergone multiple disciplinary issues and doesn’t go to class, USC told him to hit the portal, the star WR had 1 TD all year he asked for $1 million… at some point you gotta say sorry go kick rocks.

The underlying reason for the exodus from Troy is that USC isn’t paying the big bucks to these players. Yesterday, I heard on the KNBC sports report that other top colleges are budgeting about $20 million for players’ compensation, which comes to about $333K per player. If USC continues to be stingy with the money paid to these athletes, we can forget about their chances of winning much of anything.
