Guerrero Resigns at Norwalk

By Tim Peterson

(Norwalk) – Ruben Guerrero has stepped down as the head football coach at Norwalk after five seasons he confirmed Wednesday.

The Lancers went 10-1 overall last year and won the Mid Cities League with a record of 5-0. They lost in the first round of the CIF Division 9 Playoffs to Warren 17-7.

In 2024 Norwalk went 8-3 overall (4-1 in the Mid Cities League) and fell in the first round of the CIF Playoffs to St. Genevieve.

The Lancers best year may have been 2022 when they went 10-2 overall and advanced to the second round of the playoffs before losing to Muir.

The Lancers had an overall record of 37-18 under Guerrero during his five-year tenure and 1-4 in the CIF Playoffs.

Norwalk will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

Coach Guerrero must have been doing something right they did go undefeated until the playoffs. Word around the area was how tough he would make his teams and how strong he made them. Very sad to see him leave with about 8 starters both sides of the ball returning. Maybe the administration wasn’t supportive of a program on the rise.

@Bottom Line – They received a#2 seed in D14 as at large . There only league win was a forfeit against Glenn . The two league losses were blowouts v Cerritos and Artesia
The 2023 team was better . They were in D13 and lost close game v Bishop Montgomery

How good you are is defined by division not playoff performance. This is the entire premise of the new playoff system . Pioneer was favored in all playoff games , heavily favored in most . So they did what they were supposed to do ; I’m not discounting the accomplishments, just putting the qualitative analysis into question .
I’m glad Pioneer had success that would have never happened otherwise

Does anyone feel it’s a bit odd to call the Pioneer football team of a year ago ‘champions’ when they weren’t even good enough to be reinstated in the Del Rio league? Can there be any doubt that the double-digit divisions, and D14 in particular, are simply CIF’s way of siphoning a few extra bucks off gullible fans? All sports team rankings are comparative, and compared with what’s out there, the Titan product ranks very poorly–no matter who wishes otherwise.

Guaranteed: Guerrero has been hired as the coach at one of the schools with a vacancy. Nothing else explains the lateness of this move, or the fact that there are no sob stories about spending time with the family. If Whittier or Pioneer has opened their wallets to give Ruben a teaching job, this man might be headed in their direction. Lousy football programs, but great pay.
From T. Peterson: It’s really not that late. Many coaches resign in January. Probably the busiest month.
