Rosemead Puts Away South in Second Half

(Rosemead) – Rosemead went on 10-0 run to open the third quarter and went on to beat South El Monte 46-29 Wednesday night in Mission Valley League action at Rosemead High.

The Panthers led by just two points at the half but came out firing in the third quarter to pull away from the Eagles. They scored ten consecutive points to start the quarter and by the time the buzzer sounded to end the third Rosemead had outscored South El Monte 19-10 and was up 36-25.

Jacob Curiel knocked down three three-point shots and Rhys Anderson also hit one as the Panthers hit four in the quarter. After the early run South responded with a quick five points of its own but the Eagles were still down by 11 heading into the fourth.

Rosemead kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to start to go up 43-25 and put the game on ice. Trevor Luong scored six points in the fourth quarter and the Panthers defense held South El Monte to just four points in the final frame.

Early in the game both teams struggled offensively as South El Monte led 7-4 after the first quarter. Leo Fang scored six points for the Panthers in the second quarter and Kai Underwood and Max Pineda both hit threes for the Eagles as the two teams began to warm up. Rosemead turned up the heat in the third while South El Monte could bever find a rhythm and the Panthers took control.

“A lot of it was because of our defense. To hold a team like that to just 29 points is tremendous,” said Rosemead coach Sonny Hayes.

For South El Monte nobody finished in double figures. Underwood and Daniel Guzman each had six points and Pineda added five.

Anderson led the way for Rosemead with 13 points and Curiel had nine – all from beyond the arc. JaRon Phan, Fang and Luong all scored six points.

With the victory Rosemead improved to 15-10 overall and 7-2 in the Mission Valley League. The Panthers pulled into a three-way tie for first with Arroyo and Gabrielino. South El Monte dropped to 11-15 and 6-4.
